Ed was my next door neighbor and I knew him all my life. I will never forget this incredibly intelligent young man! I shall never forget his Mother receiving the US flag at his funeral.
Fogleman Joins L Co
submitted by Robert F. Gilbert
OK, one afternoon approximately 4 to 5 days before Fogleman's death when the entire Team was KIA, a Captain from the Pathfinder Platoon for the 101st Abn, an E-4 and Captain Guy, CO of the L/75th Rangers were in the Mess hall for Delta Troop, 2/17th Air Cavalry. Following the noon meal CPT Guy came by the Orderly Room Hooch and said this Soldier, Fogleman, wanted to be a Ranger and was coming to us from the 101st Pathfinder Platoon and to do whatever was necessary. Fogleman went through a few days of special training to prepare him for a patrol and was assigned to a Team going out as a Radio Relay. Some individuals alluded to these as "soft" patrols, however, there is no such thing. You may insert a patrol into an area where there has been little if any contact for a "training" mission, but there are no soft patrols. When I learned the entire Team was KIA by mid-morning and made out casualty reports on each man, I then called an old friend the Pathfinder Detachment First Sergeant, Julian Guzman , and notified him of Fogleman's death. His response was one of utter disbelief, however, my reason for calling was to determine if he had requested orders transferring Fogleman to the Ranger Company. When he responded no, I said, OK, I'll take care of it, but you have your Captain get his ass down to Division AG and do some explaining . I hung up and took a Company Jeep to the Division Forward Adjutant Generals (AG) Office at or near Phu Bai. I approached an AG Captain sitting behind a casualty officer sign and told him the story about Fogleman joining my Ranger Company on the verbal orders of two Commanding Officers (VOCO), which was totally unauthorized for moving men or equipment administratively, except under extreme conditions. Then I told him he had a choice. He could either assist two fellow Captains by having Special Orders cut (typed) and back dating them by about four days, or, he could let it all hang out and those two Captains were going to jail, I didn't care either way because I was not involved in the unlawful transfer, and further, that with the antiwar protests going on in the USA right now, this would be another nail in the US Army's coffin, when the media became aware of the information or when his parents questioned how he got from the Pathfinders to the Rangers. Well, I wish you could have seen the look on this young Captains face. He could not believe what he just heard and his face reflected that. Suddenly a jeep came to a dusty halt outside slinging a huge cloud of it into the building and out jumps the Pathfinder Captain who fairly vaults into the building all decked out in spit-shined Jump Boots, starched Jungle Fatigues and wearing a black beret, looking like he was ready for a parade. The wild look on his face told it all. His ass was grass and the Green machine was about to eat him alive for his VOCO (voice confirmation) transfer of Fogleman, and he knew it. I turned around to face him because he was jumping from side to side not knowing where to go and I pointed to the AG Captain behind me and said, "right there Captain." He jumped over to the AG's desk and started woofing . I walked out and drove back to Camp Eagle, but not before I turned around to catch the expression on the AG Captain's face. Total disbelief. But, that is how Fogleman got to the company.
