Tamiya R/C TANK HOP-UP OPTIONS DMD Turret Unit Kit contents |

Tamiya
currently markets a turret traverse unit as a "hop-up" option. I presume this
device originated with the early Tamiya Tiger II (Henschel turret) and the
Gephard--but I speculate. If you were around back then, you know that Tamiya's first Tiger II had a strobe-flash to simulate muzzle blast, and turret traverse/gun elevation. Either way, I don't care. It is nice to have this Hop-up part available. This kit has instructions and parts to upgrade either the Sherman or the King Tiger. Essentially, this kit is a servo, but it lacks the |
sophisticated electronics
a simple $10 servo takes for granted. In addition, in normal installations without
Tamiya's wonderful T-03 controller unit, this device requires a servo to work. On this website, I give a scale Drawing of a simple servo-activated turret traverse mechanism for the Sherman. HOWEVER, let me say that my solution give a very unrealistic rotation speed to the turret. Tamiya's hop-up kit is the way to go, unless you can't afford it.

What's in the box? | |||
The main gearbox with the clutch. The clutch is visible above the black
spring and is simply two cork disks under pressure of the spring. The arm between
them can slip if the turret snags or gets bogged down for any reason. . . . . .this saves the gears from stripping under load. |

The other parts included in the kit. Complicated 'L' shape on left is mounting bracket for the King Tiger. The 'T' shaped plate mounts to the 'L' shape bracket to adapt the assembly for the Sherman. Standoff screws at the top are for the Sherman only, and mount into pre-formed sockets on the Sherman turret. |

The instructions cover both Tamiya's King Tiger and Sherman. As is usual
with Tamiya, the instructions are multi-lingual and superb. The two samples at left are for the Sherman. |
