First identified by the USA in the late 1970's, when recorded by orbiting satalites while undergoing early flight test, after initial flight on 22nd of February 1975, at the SSSR's Ramenskoye test centre. This aircraft was given the provisional designation 'Ram-J' by the US department of defence. When deliveries to the Soviet Air Forces began in late 1980, it was learned in the west that this new aircraft was the Sukhoy Su-25, and in 1982 NATO allocated it the reporting name 'Frogfoot'. The 'Frogfoot-A' intial model is regarded by the west as a Russian aircraft with the same role as the Fairchild A-10A 'Thunderbolt II', and the 2 aircraft are just as tough, in reality, but the initial Su-25 does not quite match the load carrying ability of the A-10. However, one rarely sees the A-10 fully loaded apart from at airshows, so this may not be quite a problem. It does, however have far superior performance to the A-10 and it's design is more conventional, but not as ugly as the A-10, with a shoulder-wing configuration, the wing incorporating considerable anthedral and about 20 degrees of sweepback. The tail unit is conventional, the landing gear is of retractable tricycle type with low pressure tyres designed specifically for rough surfaces, and power is provided by two 4500-kg (9,921-Ib) dry thrust Tumanskii R-195 turbojets mounted in long nacelles in the wing root. The single-seat accomadation for the pilot is protected by armour which is incorporated in the fuselage side structure and by a flat bullet-proof windscreen. The aircraft carries one GSh-30-2 two-barrel cannon with 250 rounds; provision for 4400kg (9700Ib) of disposable stores including R-73 and R-60 AAM's,KAB-250 guided bombs, bombs, cluster bombs, dispenser weapons, napalm tanks, tactical nuclear missiles and bombs, 23-mm trainable cannon pods, large caliber rockets, rocket launcher pods and drop tanks, carried on 10 external hardpoints. About 700 aircraft are in CIS service and production is continuing on the Su-39 (export Su-25TK) advanced aircraft based on the Su-25UB. |
