What's a
Ridgerunner?

Before
"Hillbilly" became the term outlanders used to describe us, Ridgerunner
was used most frequently. It came from the fact that the quickest way from one point to another in the Appalachians was to walk (or run) the ridgelines.  So came the term Ridgerunners.  It later was tied to moonshiners because running the ridges was the quickest way to move your  brew from one cove to the next (or holler to holler if you're from the Hills)... and get away from pesky Revenuers...
My Grandpa ran the ridge to court my Grandma.
I use the name Ridgerunner with pride because it spans a long heritage of tough, hardy, close to the land people...my people.

I'm a Ridgerunner, Spelunker (yeah, I still use that term...got a problem with it?) and Geologist (got the degree, just not the job to go with it...)

Such is life...
My name is Garry and I live smack dab in the middle of the Great Smokey Mountains of North Carolina.  My family goes back at least 6 generations here and it is home.  My roots go back to the Lowland Scots and Irish migration to this area.

My sons have reached adulthood and don't need Dad as much as they used to, so Dad can now spend more time on interests and hobbies now.
I'm getting back into caving after a 20 year layoff. I've started collecting micromounts and sand samples for exchange.  I'm working on a homebuilt seismograph station and a home meteorological station.  And they wonder why I advocate catastrophism???
And I just started Geocaching...neat stuff...

I'm just starting this page so I 'll be adding more as time goes by...
No this isn't Casablanca...and I'm not Bogart....
Actually more like Quigley Down Under....
