Frank wasn't sure where he was when this was taken. It might be Cobb Bridge. As I'm remembering things, we would be looking in the general direction of Hill 10. If this is right, there was a 106mm recoiless rifle on the little hill behind the bunker. While we were at the bridge this 106 was never used. There was another 106 on the other side of the river. One day it went off, never did find out what happened. A young boy from the nearby town was injured. They brought in a chopper and took him and his mother to the hospital in Da Nang. No idea how he made out. |

LCpl Sammy Sullivan in the Que Son Mountains. The M-79 (called a Blooper) was a very effective weapon. It had a lot of range and could be fired accurately to 400 meters. There were a whole variety of rounds: an HE round that had a lot of shrapnel, a shotgun type round, and a illumination round. There may have been more. The big problem with them was that the ammo was heavy. With all the gear you had to carry anyway another 40-50 pounds was a lot. Sammy died in February 2002 of cancer. The dirt behind Sullivan is a Vietnamese grave. Almost all of them were round. |
