Accident Summary:
ON 12 AUGUST 1971, AT APPROXIMATELY 1605 THE PILOT, ^CAPTAIN MULLIGAN^, WAS ATTEMPTING A TAKEOFF FROM POL AT MINH LONG, RVN, IN A ^UH-1C^ ARMED HELICOPTER, ^SN 66-15003^. HE HAD CHECKED A FLAG NEARBY AND FOUND THE WIND TO BE CALM. HE HOVERED TO THE SOUTHEASTERN MOST PART OF THE POL AREA AND REPORTED THAT HE WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN A TWO-FEET HOVER WITH 6550 RPM. HE BEGAN THE TAKEOFF FROM THE HOVER USING THE LONG AXIS OF THE AREA AND MUST PRIOR TO OBTAINING EFFECTIVE TRANSLATIONAL LIFT HE HAD TO INCREASE COLLECTIVE PITCH TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT FROM SETTLING. AT THIS TIME THE PRM BLED TO ABOUT 6300. HE REPORTED THAT HE HAD ENTERED EFFECTIVE TRANSLATIONAL LIFT AND HAD JUST BEGUN CLMMBING OUT WHEN ADDITIONAL PITCH WAS REQUIRED TO CLEAR A BARBED WIRE CONSTRUCTION IN HIS TAKEOFF PATH. THIS LED TO FURTHER RPM DECAY. SEEING THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE BARRIER, THE PILOT APPLIED SUFFICICIENT AFT CYCLIC TO CLEAR THE BARRIER. AS A RESULT, EFFECTIVE TRANSLATIONAL LIFT WAS LOST AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SETTLE AGAIN. AT THIS TIME THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, WHO WAS MONITORING THE INSTRUMENTS, REPORTED THAT THE RPM WAS 5900. SEEING THAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER AND CONTINUE THE TAKEOFF, THE PILOT USED THE REMAINING PITCH TO CUSHION THE AIRCRAFT ONTO THE GROUND. THE PILOT HAD MAINTAINED FULL ENGINE POWER TO THE SYSTEM AND A LOSS OF ANTI-TORQUE CONTROL WAS EXPERIENCED JUST PRIOR TOUCHDOWN. THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SPIN TO THE RIGHT AND CONTACTED THE GROUND WITH THE LEFT SKID FIRST IN A RIGHT HAND SPIN RESULTING IN A HARD LANDING AND APPROXIMATELY 120 DEGREES OF ROTATION. THE CREWCHIEF HAD UNFASTENED HIS SEAT BELT JUST PIROR TO CONTACT AND WAS THROWN OUT. THE ONLY INJURIES WERE BACK AND NECK STRAINS TO THE CREWCHIEF AND GUNNER.\\
