Accident Summary:
THE AIRCRAFT IN QUESTION DEPARTED BLACKSMITH PAD, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE B TROOP MAINTENANCE AREA, AND WAS CLEARED TO ENTER TRAFFIC FOR A 360 DEGREES LANDING. THE PILOT DEPARTED TO THE NORTHWEST AND PROCEEDED TO ENTER TRAFFIC ON EXTENDED LEFT DOWNWIND. DOWNWIND AND LEFT BASE WAS FLOWN WITHOUT ANY INDICATION OF TROUBLE. THE PILOT TURNED FINAL AND ABOUT HALF WAY TO TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT LOST POWER AND DESCENDED IMPACTING THE GROUND FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT 75 FEET SHORT OF A FENCE. THE FENCE RAN EAST AND WEST AND WAS LOCATED AT THE SOUTH END OF THE ACTIVE. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED AND HIT THE GROUND AGAIN BEFORE STRIKING THE FENCE NOSE FIRST. IT WENT THROUGH THE FIVE STRAND BARBED WIRE FENCE BREAKING ONE 8" DIAMETER POST OFF EVEN WITH THE GROUND AND CUTTING ANOTHER ONE IN HALF. IT THEN SKIDDED THROUGH THE FENCE, MADE CONTACT WITH SEVERAL COMMUNICATION WIRES AND HIT NOSE FIRST ON THE NORTH BANK OF A LARGE DRAINAGE DITCH. THE DISTANCE FROM THE FENCE TO THE DRAINAGE DITCH WAS ABOUT 10 FEET. AS IT HIT THE DITCH BANK, THE TAIL SWUNG TO THE RIGHT. AT THE SAME TIME, THE MAIN ROTOR BLADE CUT APPROXIMATELY 1/4 OF THE TAIL BOOM OFF. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST RIGHT SIDE UP AND FACING WEST IN THE DITCH.\\
