Accident Summary:
ON 25 MAY 1971, AT 1200 HOURS. ARMY AIRCRAFT UH-1H, SERIAL NUMBER ^68-15730^ PILOTED BY ^WO1 BRAMBLETT^ AND ^CPT STROUD^ MADE A REFUELING STOP TO DAK TO II ENROUTE TO KONTUM AND PLEIKU, RVN. AFTER DEPARTING DAK TO THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER CALLED KONTUM FOR ARTILLERY ADVISORY ALONG HIS ROUTE OF FLIGHT. KONTUM ADVISED HIM TO REMAIN NORTH OF TAN CAN UNTIL WELL EAST AND THEN HE WOULD BR CLEAR DOWN QL-14 INTO KONTUM. THIS WAS DUE TO ARTILLERY FIRE COMING FROM TAN CAN. ^CPT STROUD^ FLEW THE AIRCRAFT AS ADVISED, NORTH OF TAN CAN UNTIL THEY WERE CLEAR TO THE EAST, THEN HE TURNED THE AIRCRAFT SOUTHWARD TO REINTERCEPT QL-14 WHEN THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE FAILED. ^WO1 BRAMBLETT^ TOOK THE AIRCRAFT CONTROLS AND COMPLETED THE FORCED LANDING MAKING A MAY DAY CALL GOING DOWN. THE FLIGHT PATH USED TO AVOID THE ARTILLERY HAD TAKEN THE AIRCRAFT OVER TERRAIN UNACCEPTABLE AS FORCED LANDING AREAS DUE TO TREES AND UNEVEN TERRAIN IN ANY OPEN AREAS. ^WO1 BRAMBLETT^ EXTENDED THE NORMAL GLIDE ANGLE OF THE AIRCRAFT BY UTILIZING ROTOR RPM. THIS PROCEDURE OF BLEEDING THE ROTOR RPM ALLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND ON THE ROAD RATHER THAN IN TREES BUT THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT RPM REMAINING TO EFFECT A SAFE TOUCHDOWN. DURING THE FORCED LANDING DESCENT THE AIRCRAFT CREWCHIEF OBSERVED FLAME AND SMOKE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST OF THE ENGINE. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER NOTED DURING DESCENT THAT THE ENGINE RPM DROPPED TO ZERO. HAVING INSUFFICIENT ROTOR RPM REMAINING TO CUSHION THE LANDING THE AIRCRAFT FORCED LANDING TERMINATED IN A HARD LANDING CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME AND COMPONENTS. THE AIRCRAFT CREW AND PASSENGERS WERE PICKED UP WITHIN 20 MINUTES OF TOUCHDOWN. THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT PERSONAL INJURIES DUE TO THE HARD LANDING. THE COMMANDING OFFICER, 52ND AVIATION BATTALION, AUTHORIZED IMMEDIATE RECOVERY OF THE DOWNED AIRCRAFT AND IT WAS RECOVERED BY ^"C" COMPANY, 228TH ASH CO^. AND DELIVERED TO THE ^604TH^ T.C. IN PLEIKU WHERE IT WAS INSPECTED BY THE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION BOARD.\\
