BRIAN   JAMES   POCKAR

Oct. 27, 1959 - Apr. 28, 1992

In The Perpetual
Pursuit Of The
Power Of One

Brian Pockar died at the age of 32 years.   He was remembered for his grace and charm at St. John's Catholic Church on the 2nd day of May, 1992.

Brian was a figure skater, a three-time Canadian national champion, and a world bronze medalist.   But he was much more than that.   Brian was a sports commentator for CTV television and served as artistic director of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics closing ceremonies.

He was more than that though.   More than what he did.   He was brother, son, and friend.

Even during his struggle with AIDS, he never lost his dignity.   Not when he was fired as a commentator.   Not when he was struggling with life's viscisitudes.

He is buried in St. Joseph's section of Queen's Park Cemetary in Calgary, Canada.

The year 1992 presented many challenges for John and I.   That summer, there was a tragic hotel fire in Calgary, which involved both of us, me and my little Robinhood, as material witnesses.   Never did John consider that he, a sporting goods distributor -- a seller of embroidered T-shirts and custom imprinted golf balls -- would somehow get drawn in when a fire fighter, James Morley, died in the inferno.

You can read the report to adjusters for the insurers: Royal Insurance, here.

Late in the year, John and I both sat mesmerized as Windsor Castle, went up in flames.   That is the picture which you see at the bottom of this page: the smoke of Windsor in the autumn of 1992. Annus Horribilus.
