Company H, 1st Pennsylvania Rifles "Bucktails"
February 17, 2002 Meeting Minutes
Adams County, Gettysburg

The first meeting of Kane’s Rifles, Company H, also known as the Forty-Second Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, has been held with many topics being discussed. The first order of business was to decide the name in which the unit would go by as the regiment had many that it went by. It was decided, as being seen by now, we, as Company H, will go by Kane’s Rifles.

The topic of events came up. There were some events that had already been proposed to do this year. The question came up as to whether we wished to do any other events. Being this is our first year, we will stay small and do living history and/or recruiting events. Those three events are as follows:

· Georgetown, Delaware – July 26th – 28th, 2002

· Wilmington Train Raid, Delaware – September 20th – 22nd, 2002

· Rising Sun, Maryland – October 4th – 6th, 2002

· Wax Museum, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – November 22nd – 24th, 2002.
(Added to Company H Event Schedule after meeting. –Editor AJMIII)

All are good events and should not only be fun, but good recruiting events. The arranging of committees in the unit is a good idea and will be a good addition to our unit. At this time, as we do not have many members, the committees will be held off. When we start getting members we will start enacting committees such as preservation, historical and so forth. The big issue ahead of us is the object of recruiting. The application that Ken Gulick drew up is approved by the company, Dean Cass and Augie Marchetti. Posters, business cards, and postings at sutlers will be our primary form of recruiting outside of doing actual events.

To all members of the company, please feel free and do not be afraid to make up any recruiting poster that you think would be acceptable and hand them out to nearby food stores, malls, and any other places in your area that you think would be a good site to recruit. Again, this is not one persons company, but all of ours. Therefore I trust your judgment on the posters you construct. Augie brought up the idea of posting articles, so to speak, in the newspapers in the Delaware Valley area. I believe this is a great idea and should be looked at further. Our only trap in that area right now is finances. So if you wish to wait till we get some money, that would be ok with me [Kenny Gulick]. Or we can each chip in some money for this project. Please let me know your feelings on this.

On the subject of money, fund raisers are going to play a big part in us getting our feet wet in our financial situation. The following ideas were given for fund raisers. Having a car wash, donation cups at recruiting stations, selling hard tack at recruiting stations and possibly getting a Wax Museum weekend. I will check into the possibility of a Wax Museum weekend. Even though it would be a good idea, the motion to hold off on insurance for the time being was given and accepted. We should be ok for the first year. After the 2003 season starts, especially if we did a lot of recruiting, we need to get insurance. I will do checking on different plans. Here again we need to establish a treasury. Membership dues were established for prices of the membership. It will be $15.00 for a full single membership and $25.00 for a full family membership. I believe we should also have a price for associate membership. I do believe we will pick up some members that wish to only be associate members. Please let me know what you think about prices in that area.

As Company B does, it would be a good idea to have extra gear for people to borrow and try out the hobby before they actually commit to the cost. We decided that we had enough coats to hand out, although we may want to consider one or two. We decided to purchase two pairs of pants, two sets of complete leathers, and shoes, hats, and shirts should be covered as well. Meaning we should not have to buy any. We can loan a couple pairs of shoes, shirts and hats.

The last thing talked about was the establishment of by-laws. I will not enclose in minutes the actual by-laws. I will type them up separately. I do believe that we need to add more to our by-laws, but we ran short on time at our meeting. If you have any ideas as far as rule and regulations for our by-laws or safety factors, please send those ideas my way so that I can add them in. This concluded the first meeting of the Kane’s Rifles, Company H. I will keep in touch with all as I ask you to do the same. I am absolutely convinced we have our head on straight and our feet wet. Lets keep moving forward and make one hell of a Company.
