1st Sergeant Thomas J. Belton

First Sergeant Thomas J. Belton
42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment
Company B
Military Record
Thomas J. Belton was amongst the first 30 names secured for volunteers for this Company when formation for this unit began. However, there is some confusion with his rank. In Thompson & Rauch's "History of the Bucktails," pg 19 &20; it shows him listed as Second Lieutenant. However, the Company B Muster Roll complied by both Thompson & Rauch and Bates' "History of Pennsylvania Volunteers" he is listed as only First Sergeant. No demotions in rank are mentioned, but his final rank seems to be that of First Sergeant. He Mustered into service June 4th, 1861- and was killed in action July 3rd 1863 in a counter-attack against Georgian's in near the Wheatfield.
