Ward was mustered into service as a Private in Company C May 30, 1861 and promoted to Hospital Surgeon at a date unknown. On July 1st, 1862, Ward was promoted 2nd Lieutenant in Company I. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg December 13th, 1862. On March 1st, 1863, he was promoted again from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant. At the end of service for the Bucktails, the majority of the Soldiers from this regiment choose to re-enlist in the 190th Pennsylvania Volunteers.

It should also be known, that Ward was one of the Officer's who helped carry the body of Colonel Charles Frederick Taylor off the field July 2nd 1863 at Gettysburg.
