Henry A. Porter enlisted to fight with the 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteers September 6th, 1862,
while however his brother William was drafted into service December 4th of that same year. Both were mustered into
military service as Privates. They served throughout the war in Company H of the same regiment.
However, both would die before the end of the war.
Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers has Henry A. as "Died on 4/21/1865" place unknown. While
William A. is listed "died on 1/7/1864 at Culpeper, Virginia." Along with William's source is the
burial plot, "Buried in National Cemetery, Block 1, Section A, Row 8, Grave 727."Both served and died for the Union.
