Guard House at Mount Pleasant Hospital Dear Kate,
I hope this will not suprise you if it dated at a guard house. We was sent here this morning, myself and nine men. I have the control of them. I do not know how long we shal be here, perhaps two or three days and perhaps longer. It is quite a pleasant place. The soldiers seem to be well cared for. They look clean and nice.
I have been over to the camp to see if I had some letters but no letters there for any of us. I do not see what the reason is. I have not had a letter that was sent direct to Washington since I came here. Some of the boys got letters to day that was mailed at Beauville Friday last, only two days ago. Perhaps I have not sent the right directions. It is this:
C K 149 regiment P V
care Col Roy Stone
Washington D C
I think that if you write and put on this directions it will come this way, as the boys, the most of them, get some every day. What is the reason I do not? I think you must write. I have writen as often as every other day, or nearly, and got 5 letters from you. I do not want you to think that I am complaining, for that is not my name. I presume you write as often as you can. I get more time than you do. There is a great deal of time that I have nothing to do, only to write to some of my friends. I have not heard from Eldridge since I saw him. I must write to him before long as I want to hear from him. I see by the papers that the rebels are leaving Maryland as fast as they can I thought it would be best for them not to go up that way but they must take there own way. I think perhaps we will have ours some time.
We have all the peaches that we want to eat here now. Some of the boys make a draw every night, so that we do not have to buy any. They are first rate. I have wished a good many times that you could have the chance to get some but I don't see any way to have them sent.
Write soon. My love to all inquire, the larger share to yourself and the little ones, and mother of course. You must all write.
