Washington Nov 19th 1862
Dear Kate,
I have just received your letter. Was glad to hear that you were there all right and enjoying yourself so well. I wrote to you last week one day telling you that I had received the likeness. I think a great deal of it, you had better believe. For the last week I have not been on duty, but am so I can go on again at any time now, but would like to be off a few days longer if it's all convienent, but at any time now.
You did not write but the folks were all well. I presume they were.
Lieut Hoyt's family and sister are here now. Have been for some days past I was up and spent one afternoon with them. It seems like home some to see a Potter woman again. I believe they are going home before long.
I was over and went through the Capital again yesterday. It beats everything that ever I saw, in fact it beats itself allmost. It appears by the papers this morning that Burnside is doing something. I hope he may. I did have faith in him and do yet.
I told you last week that I had seen Eldridge. He was well.
There is about 25 men sick now in our company. Five have died and one more has deserted. Let them go. They would do us no good here, if that's their play. We hear nothing from Mart as yet, presume we shall not. Do you supose that their would have been such a rush to Potter if Lieut Baker had been nothing but a private and his name had been Tracy? But he has got home again.
John is as fat as need be. He weighs more than I do. Tough as ever. George has got a hard cold but he will be all right in a few days.
I received two letters from you yesterday. One was wrote the 26 of Oct. and mailed the 14, the day you wrote the one I got to day. I guess they will all get along some time. Tell Laura that it is time I had one from her, for I like to get letters as often as I can.
Tell Willie he must be a good boy and help take care of Mark till I come home again. Tell Mark he must keep Pa's place at the table all clean as he used to last fall. Have you any idea its over three months scince I left home? Give my love to all who enquire.
As ever yours,
Bert
