149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Colonel Roy Stone, Commanding

Civil War Letters of Lieutenant Albert L. Harvey
149th Pennsylvania Volunteers
Company K

Washington Nov 29th 1862

Dear Kate,

Yours of the 23rd came to hand yesterday. Was glad to hear that you were all well. I am doing duty at the post office as well as common. I received a letter from Jerome wrote this same day that yours was. They were well in Potter there. Mary and Jerry were there. Thomas has his discharge. Looks as well as ever. Harry has his furlough extended to forty days. Hear nothing from Mart. There has another one deserted from our company, two in all Some been discharged and lots of them are in the hospital. We number about 50 men that is fit for duty now.

Our folks had not got home when Jerome wrote. They were looking for them every day. Presume they are there before this time. I expect you will be going home before long. John had a letter from Beck. Minnie is not much better. She cannot walk any yet. I presume she is some lonesome there all alone this winter. John is one of the best soldiers that we have in our company. Wish they were all like him. I have some first rate boys with me and some that will find fault, do the best you can for them. I think the most of them like me very well. I try and make it as pleasant as I can for them, and generaly suckseed in pleasing the most of them.

I think if there is a chance that John will get promoted to a Sergant. They wanted him for service in the hospital and he wanted to go, and the Capt told him if there was any chance, he should have an office that would pay him as well. I hope he will for John diserves it if any body does. John has done full as well as I expected he would. Does not drink much of anything. Has not spent near as much money as I have scince we came here

I shall not spend more in the same length of time, as I shall not be able to get it. I guess they are not going to pay us any more money till they get ready. If we do not have it we shall not spend it that's shure. I thought if I got any to send to Jerome I would send it to William W. or some of our friends in Triangle and she could get it from them most any time unless there is an express office near them. If there is, I wish you would let me know it. I do not thing of any thing more so I will close.

Write as often as you can. As ever yours,,
Bert
Love to All
