I was a platoon leader with the 1/61st and worked with you guys just about the whole time I was there (69-70). I was at the big operation in late March 70 into the hills west of A-4 where we got hit by NVA artillery and where we almost were over-run by sappers one night at the 1/61st Jump CP NDP (3 1/77th KIA's that night). Also was at the firefight east of A-4 were we left a 1/77th KIA at the scene and had to go back and get him the next day. I had the greatest respect for you guys. We got to jump off our APC's into holes when we got shot at, you had to stay on your tanks and fight...and RPG's could penetrate an M-48. As I said... some of the bravest men on the planet. Welcome home! John Kieffer 1LT, Infantry 1/61st Infantry (Mech), 5th Infantry Division Vietnam Dec 69 - Dec 70 |

It's still hard for me to believe just looking for my tank crew and old friends in the 3rd p atoon led to one great reunion. We have one person to thank for that and it's Patricia Johnson, "Peach". If not for her constant buddy searching on the PC and endless phone calls I think a lot of us would still be wondering how our buddy's from the 1/77th were doing. God bless her for finding all of you. We're not done yet though. The new 1/77th association and Peach are planning a bigger and better reunion for 2001. Keep checking back for details. We also have a message board here on this site for you to post your message on. Looking forward to seeing you all again in 2001 and the newly found 1/77th Vietnam Vets. |
