HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Company B was stationed at Ft. Scott, Kansas in January of 1861, and was ordered to the St. Louis arsenal the following month under the command of Captain Nathaniel Lyon. After Lyon's promotion to brigadier general and the start of the Civil War, Company B saw action at the Battle of Booneville, Missouri on June 17th and the skirmish at Dug Springs, Missouri on August 2nd as part of the Lyon Campaign. The company was heavily engaged on Bloody Hill at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861.

The Maltese Cross of 5th Corps

Company B then joined the rest of the regiment serving with the 2nd Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac and fought in the Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign of 1864 and the Siege of Petersburg.

The [U.S. Regular] troops behaved with great gallantry on this occasion, and although, as the accompanying report of casualties shows, the losses were terrible, no one thought of retiring till the order was given.
--Gen. Romeyn Ayers, Report of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863.

The regular troops once more justify their old reputations; not a single man has left the ranks, and they allow themselves to be decimated without flinching.
--Louis Philippe d'Orleans
