First Quarter 9th Grade Focus: Short Stories Literary Terms Greek Mythology The Odyssey Grammar 10th Grade Short Stories Literary Terms The Time Machine FCAT Practice Announcements Accelerated Reader Lists Students are required to read several novels from the Accelerated Reader (A.R.) list. The A.R. lists are available in the Media Center at Oviedo High School, the Oviedo High School website, the Oviedo Public Library, and my classroom. Classroom Library Research proves that children will read more when books are readily available therefore, I have created a classroom library of 250 novels. Students may check out as many novels as the want as long as they return all book to me by the end of each quarter. If a novel is lost, students are held financially responsible. |
Course Description: - 9th Grade Honors: Students will have exposure to various genres of literature including an epic, a play, several short stories and novels. Students will engage in analysis of texts; forging connections between history and literature; multiple presententations including a major research project; and many different forms of writing. In order for students to benefit the most from this educational experience, students should come to class ready to participate in all activities, discuss with insight, and work both in small groups and individually. Students should expect to have at least 30 minutes of homework every night including holidays and school vacations. Honor students should maintain a C average or better in 9th grade English Honors. Any student with a 60% or below average should be taken out of Honors and placed into a Standard level class. - 10th Grade Standard English and Read 180: The Read 180 and 10th Grade Standard English course is a two hour class which will teach the required 10th grade English curriculum as well as provide the newest method of teaching reading comprehension. For the first hour of class, students will rotate between three different stations: computer, individual reading, and small group teacher instruction. On the computer, students read a passage and answer questions about the passage, work on vocabulary words, and practice spelling. During individual reading time, students will read silently from novels of their own choice. The small group instruction will provide a time for your child to have one-on-one attention from me. We will work on reading comprehension, grammar, writing improvement, and many other skills. For the second half of class students receive the standard 10th grade English curriculum.
