Early Imperial German Armies

General History

This army list allows you to create an Imperial German army from the period of approximately 1100 to 1300. During this period the fortunes of the Imperial German crown both waxed and waned. The near constant involvement of the Emperors in Italy, and the difficulties with the Pope reguarding Investiture weakened Imperial power considerably, to the point where the many German princes and nobles were able to gain greater concessions and autonomy from the central government. The period also saw some of Germany's greatest Emperors, such as Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick II.

Ritter & Ministerailes (30pts)

German knighthood began somewhat later than in France, but quickly flourished in the 12th and especially 13th centuries. As in other medieval European states, the knights formed the backbone of the Imperial army, and indeed it was through the use of heavy cavalry that the German Emperor broke the power of the Magyars (Hungarians) at Letchfeld in 955. Although they probably were not as good cavalry as the French, they were much better on foot. Ministerailes were a peculiar class of mounted warrior found mostly in Germany, in which the individual was of unfree status.
