Trucking in Vietnam - 1968

For good or bad, this is my story.

WELCOME TO

FRED'S WEB!

Last updated on 21 March 2001

I put this page together in order to record my experience in Vietnam.

If you've been to Nam, then this may re-kindle some memories, hopefully good ones. If you haven't been there, then hopefully it will be some interesting reading.

Although all the incidents recorded here are true, its been 30 years since I experienced them, and the sequence of events or locations may be off a little.

As time goes on I should end up with 5 Chapters, more or less, the last chapter being my return to the states.

CHAPTER - 1 "GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN"

This chapter recaps my memories of my trip from the states to Vietnam.

CHAPTER - 2 "OREINTATION"

This chapter covers my first couple of days "In Country."

CHAPTER - 3 "FIRST CONVOY"

As the name implies, this is my first experience with a convoy in Nam.

CHAPTER - 4 "TRUCKING IN GENERAL"

Covers basic trucking in Nam, and my first mortar attack.

Listed below is a quick bio on myself, to include my old Army units.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey

Reared in Hialeah, Florida

Presently live just outside of Wakefield, KS

US Army 1964-1968.

In Germany I was assigned to the 396th TC at Panzer Kaserne, and the 66th TC in K-Town.

While stationed at Fort Riley I was with the 262nd TC and 23rd FASCOM.

In Nam (1968) I was with the 566th and 24th TC's.

While Cam Ranh Bay was our base station, we made countless trips north and south hauling supplies.

Stateside I drove for North American Van Lines in the 70's, and Warren Transport in the 80's.

I've also worked as a Policeman and Undersheriff. I've been with the Fort Riley Provost Marshal since 1986, where I've worked as a Crime Prevention Specialist, Physical Security Specialist, and now work as a Criminal Investigator.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to thank Dr. Ralph Grambo, Webmaster for Army Transportation Association Vietnam (ATAV), for his incouragement and assistance in putting my memories of Vietnam into text and on the Internet.

I would also like to thank Joseph Wilson, Webmaster for The Association of US Transporters in Thailand, whose own story of his tour in Vietnam, rekindled my memories of Vietnam and gave me a starting block for my story.

Both of these gentlemen are Vietnam veterans, and have excellent Web sites which contain a large amount of information on air, land & sea transportation units in vietnam which include; storys, pictures, unit history, and links to other interesting sites.

Don't forget to sign my guestbook below if you can relate to any of my old units, or just want to say Hi.
