Views of the city

Here are some views of Kaiserslautern taken from the observation deck of the Rathaus (cityhall) one of the largest buildings in Kaiserslautern.

And here are some photos of a fountain in town.

Germany is a great place to live and if you have received orders here you will more than likely love it here. It is a chance to explore Europe. My favorite place to visit is Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is only 2 hours from the base and is full of history.

Useful German Words

Bitte is Please and Your Welcome
Danke is Thank you
Sprechen sie English is Do you speak English
Eingang is an entrance
Ausgang is an Exit
Kein Eingang is NOT an Entrance (this is ususally an Fire Exit)
Polizei is of course Police
Ausfart is an Autobahn exit or off ramp
Stau is a Traffic Jam (=~) get use to this one you will be hearing it ALOT)
Strasse is street
Einbahnstrasse is a one way steet

One of the bad things about the base is it's parking situation. They have hardly any parking spaces and you are lucky if you get close to where you want to be. That is the only thing we don't like about Ramstein AB.

Did You Know.......?

that you can tell where a German is from by the lisence plate?
(KL is Kaiserslautern) The first group of letters on a German lisences plate tells where the car is from.

that getting served ice in drinks is extremely rare and if you do ask for ICE you may get Ice cream instead?
the German word EIS (ice) is ice cream!

once served a meal in a restruant the Waiter/Waitress will not return again unless called?
This is not being rude it just is the way German customs are. Most Americans if not warned ahead of time tend to think it is rudeness.

that you usually have to seat yourself in most restruant?
Just don't sit at a reserved table it can have a sign or else it may look different from the other tables.

that once seated in a restruant the table is yours for as long as you like?
Even if there is a long line of people waiting for a table once you sit down you don't have to move until you are ready.

all German stores are
1) on weekdays closed by 8 pm
2) on Saturday's they are closed by 4pm
and 3)on Sundays are closed.

that Germany has a Quiet Hours LAW!!?
That is true especially if you plan on living on the economy you really need to learn the hours. It is all day on Sunday (this includes laundry) on all other days I believe it is between the hours of 7pm to 7am.

Driving in Germany is really an adventure until you get use to it. The first time on the Autobahn I had to pry my hands off the steering wheel. It was so nerve wracking. But after a month or two you get use to it and it is a breeze. The first German word you will probably learn is Stau. That means a traffic jam and boy are there a lot of them. Some times a 10 to 15 minute ride will turn into a 30 to 45 minute ride but can sometimes last up to 1 to 2 hours.
