Served in VFP-63 on westpac cruise 1970.I have lots of memories of that. Not all good. We lost a pilot on that cruise, Lt. Joe Klugg, he was a good man and I think of him often. I live in Vallejo Ca. and I would see the "O" Boat just about every day. A sa
sight and a bad ending for a once proud and mighty warship.

I was searching various websites for information
regarding the casualties that occurred during the
flare locker fire of Oct. 26, 1966. My former unit's CO was transferred from our ship, the USS
Constellation, a month prior to the fire. I only
came on board the Connie in late July, so I am sad
to say I forgot his name. I was hoping that view-
ing the list of names on the memorial page would
have jogged my memory, but too many LT's are
listed. I don't know how many good sailors lost
their lives that day. I know the Oriskany was
coming out to relieve us at Yankee Station during
that time. Any way of finding out who was killed
that day? My group was the in Communications Tech-
nicians (all of us were CT's)so I would imagine
that was the group he would have commanded.
Just hoping for some information.
Thanks for a very nice website.

Your site is very good. I was happy my wife found it. I was in the 1st div. from 1964 to 1967. Outside of boot camp I spent all my navy time on the Big O. The fire is something that will always be with me. The Life magazine article has my picture in it. I
m one of the guys holding a life line to someone searching for sailors that need help. I'm standing with Dankers, Nisler, and my Chief whose name I can't remember. I remember taking my shirt off to cover my mouth, and some one handing me the yellow airdal
shirt I'm wearing in the picture. Being regular ships crew, it took alot to put that shirt on, (only kidding). I was very greatful to have that shirt because of the heat. Thanks again for the site.

3rd div. 65-68.I wasn't the pride of the Navy, but I was there. Your page is very saddening. Especialy Alvin Shifflett BM3. His knickname was Snuffy. A short almost comic looking guy. You could tell he was from the South before he opened his mouth. He had
a very funny way about himself. He was a walking good time. He was one of the first people that I met when I came on board the first time. He was in 3rd. Division then. I felt real bad when he was transfered to the 1st division. As it happened, it was the
worst thing for Snuffy. To this day I still think about him now and again. He had a michifous smile and you knew he was always up to some kind of joke.
R.I.P. Snuffy. You'll live as long as I do.

I was aboard Oriskany with VF-194 in '69 WESTPAC cruise. As an AME-2,I was in charge of the Egress Shop. I was aboard and working in the shop when a fire broke out in the aft hangar deck, two levels above our shop-I believe the hydraulics test shop! I wit
essed numerous sailors being burned, risking their lives to put out the fire and the subsequent aftermath. I don't mean to degrade your site (it is fantastic and a job well done!), but don't you believe these sailors deserve an honorable mention also???
They served in an heroic manner also and contributed to the "fire boat's" reputation! I was one of the terriorfied sailors trapped on the fantail that day-I still remember it very well. Once again-a very good website and a job well done!

My brother LTJG William A Johnson was an A4 pilot (VA-164 - Ghostriders) who was lost in the fire. On one mission over HaiPhong, he got the DFC for dropping a stick squarely on several fuel barges and a tug as they pulled away from a tanker. He said it wa
one of the few times folks on the big "O" and other ships on Yankee Station could actually see the results of the Air Wing going to war (huge cloud of smoke). I have a letter from him describing a flight where he squeezed some bakelite juice.
If it would be appropriate in your estimation after you've had a chance to read it, is there someplace on your site where others might want to read about a mission?

I have attended the reunion at San Antonio,TX and I faught my emotions to keep from shedding tears of joy to see old shipmates and thier families. I would not have taken all the wealth in the world in exchange for those two days!
The memories will forever be in my heart,in my soul, and in my mind forever. May god watch over all of the men and officers that were ever a part of that beautiful (Lady) we have all known as, The "BIG O",USS ORISKANY CVA34.
Your shipmate,
Benjamin Mojica BT2 1962-1965

Served aboard her in E-division from Sept 1965 thru Dec 1968. Mad e E-6 and was in every part of E-Division finishing in the A&o shop. Remember ringing out lighting circuits after the fire was tapped out and if there was 15k of reisitance we lit them up a
d let the heat of electricity dry them out. What a long, long day and a hard blow to the "Most Dependable Carrier in the Fleet".
