The Marines Prayer

Almighty father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails,
Make me aware of thy presence and obedient to thy will.
Keep me true to my best self,
Guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed,
Helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines,
My loved ones and thee without shame or fear.
Protect my family, give me the will to do the work of a Marine
And to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm.
Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance.
Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors,
And to the duties my country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me.
Make me considerate of those committed to my leadership.
Help me to wear my uniform with dignity,
And let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.
If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith,
If I am tempted, make me strong to resist,
If I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.
Guide me with the light of truth
And grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.
Amen

I watched the flag pass by one day, it fluttered
in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform, so young, so tall so proud;
With hair cut square and eyes alert, He'd stand
out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him had fallen
through the years,
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?

How many Pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea?
How many Soldiers' graves? No! FREEDOM is not free!

I heard the sounds of taps one night when
everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play, and felt a sudden chill.

I wondered just how many times
that taps had meant - Amen?
When a flag had covered a coffin of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children, of the mothers and the wives
Of fathers, sons, and husbands with interupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea,
Of unmarked graves in Arlington, No! FREEDOM is not free!

Not Just A Name On A Wall
By Karen Nostrant

There's a monument erected in Washington, D.C.
That stands in the form of a wall.
It's a tribute to Soldiers and Marines who gave their sweet lives,
Fifty-Nine Thousand names there in all.
The names are of Soldiers and Marines that died over in Nam.
They're carved in black granite to see.
Precious lives given for our country's sake.
Their lives lost there to keep our lives free.
It's across from the Lincoln Memorial,
In a park that is visited by all.
These Soldiers and Marines went bravely only to die,
And answered their country's proud call.
The Soldier's and Marine's were husbands and fathers and kin,
Daughters, brothers, sisters, and sons.
And friends, relative or someone we knew,
So many had lost their loved ones.
There's also a statue of three men there, too,
All with sad looks on their face.
As they're looking across to this black granite wall,
You can tell the mad horror of this place.
The place, Viet Nam, and the years there of hell,
Are not mentioned by many who served.
The strong Soldiers and Marines sent there to fight this sad war,
Came home broken, sad, maimed, and unnerved.
This is a tribute to those who have died,
And to those that still live there today.
There's not enough honor that we can bestow,
Not enough words that we can say.
And no matter how all of you Viet Nam Vets,
Came back home to your families side.
Whether your name's here or you're reading this now,
WELCOME HOME and THANK GOD for your pride!
