Just found the web site and immediately called my father, Cecil Garrison (Swiz) who was in the 29th's 104th Medical - Clearing Company. Dad went over to England in 42' and eventually met my mother who was in the ATS at the time. They were married in Tot es, Devon, near Slapton Sands prior to dad going over on June 6th. Dad tells me that he came off a "Rhino" onto the beach and hastily made his way to the Company CP set up just off the beach (there's a picture of it in the book "29 Lets Go" that Dad has. Dad's told me a few humerous stories about the war but says that he remembers little about the beach itself. At home we still have some momentos of that time -Dad still has his Eisenhower jacket and liberation money - and the letter that was handed to he troops on their way over written by Ike telling them that they were about to embark on a great crusade. We are both members of the 29th Division Association. Last summer I took my family over to England and France and we toured Normandy and saw the M jor Howey memorial in St. Lo and the beaches. I'd be interested in hearing from other sons or daughters of 29'rs so please feel free to contac me at my E-mail address. Thanks to the UK 29HI for this web page. Peace.

Actually, I am one of the founders of the American 29th reenactment unit which started back in the early 1970's. I'd like to correspond with you and see how you do it over in Eng and. I'd be glad to send you some photos (email) and other info. I also have a huge collection of original 29 uniforms and gear. I got many of them from actual vets who are members of my volunteer fire department. One of which was Robert Cuff, Gerhear 's personal driver during the war. Also, many of us do another impression, a full American Field Hospital complete with surgery.

My father, John E. Purdy, served with "C" Company of the 175th Regiment from their landing in Normandy until being wounded at St Lo. While he did not like to talk a lot about it, I do remember many things he did tell me. I only recently learned his unit info, from his discharge papers, and with that info, a friend looked up and sent me copies of daily reports obtained from the National Archives, and some of the things I remember were in the reports! I am interested in learning as much as I can about the unit's activities, and if possible, more about my father's activities. (He died in 1975.) I remember him saying he was in combat for 27 days, but have been unable to locate his name on a casualty list. He had been drafted, from New Castle, PA, which is also my home town. I'm aware that this is not a locator service, but if any of this is familiar to anyone, I'd like to hear from you. (I was also drafted from New Castle, and served in Vietnam with the 101 AB and also with the 196th Lt Inf Br...I do hav a deep appreciation of the difference between those two wars).

Like most fathers, he rarely talked about his experiences and I wasn't that keen on investigating--that is until recently. I've just completed reading Citizen Soldier and then watched Pvt. Ryan. I wish he was here with us now so I might learn more about personal experiences he shared with other GIs. He died in June '82 at the age of 69. This is a terrifc site. Seeing Saving Private Ryan renewed my interest in the D-Day invasion and the role my dad played in the war. He died 11 years ago, and like most veterans, he was reluctant to speak about his war experiences. His name was John J. Bar y and he was a 1st Lt. in the 29th Division. I know that he was injured by shrapnel from German bombs in the days that followed June 6, but I do not know when or where. I am trying to learn more about what he did during the invasion and your website was helpful to me in that regard.

I am glad that there are a lot more great people out here in web land. I had 2 cousins that died in the Buldge. I am a Vietnam veteran 3 times. I have almost 40 years in the field of "Graves Registration". Just this morning I was writing about the tempora y cemeteries in WW2. St James in Normandy, St Lo was another one and the 29th Division operated the one at St James. You all have a lot of very good information. I can't digest it all at this time, so I will be back again. There will be a Graves Registrat on/ Mortuary Affairs Reunion on Fort Lee 17-18 Sept 1999. I have the info in the scrolling text on my first page, I believe. If you all have a chance, drop by my site. Suggestions and comments are welcomed. The veterans are the ones that have shared and p lled this country together since the early days. My pages try to capture everything within the graves registration realm for our younger generation to see and value. My Web site is http://geocities.datacellar.net/pentagon/barracks/1267 Thanks again for letting m drop by and visit your site. Charles cgerlach_99@Yahoo.com

I am a producer at Maryland Public Television. I am currently looking to produce a documentary on the history of the 29th Infantry Division. We are looking for corporate undrewriting for this project. The Maryland National Guard has been most helpful in allowing acess to their archives. My father and two uncles served over seas during World War II athough not in the 29th. As a native of Maryland, the 29th has always been a special part of my family and community. My mothers cousin, Stephen Lee Starkey was killed outside of Saint Lo in J ly 1994. I lived next door to a man who as a member of the 115th Infantry Reg. landed on Omaha beach on D-Day. I did not find this out until after his death in 1995. There is still a large cadre of Twentyniners in the Maryland and Virginia Area. My goal is to preserve for future generations the story of their sacrifice. It is the least that we who enjoy so much can do honor those who give so much. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to comment as any or all advice is appreciated
