 BACKGROUND

My background in the martial arts began back when I was 18 years old. I studied a type of eclectic Kung Fu back in 1988 that was a decent first martial art. I learned the basics of punching and kicking, but we were also exposed to groundfighting similar to Brazilian Jujitsu. I guess my instructor was a little ahead of his time.

Despite some of the positive things, I did notice that a lot of the katas and techniques we were using did not seem very practical. As time grew on I grew more disillusioned and decided to move on. During my quest to find a truly practical street-efficent martial art, I tried things like Aikido, Jeet Kune Do, Hisardut, and Krav Maga. I also attended places like LA Boxing and Extreme University where I was exposed to Kali/Escrima and more Brazilian Jujitsu.

In time, I determined the more military/law enforcement styles of martial arts were the ones I preferred. They were simple, direct, and effective. I also read as much as I possibly could on the subject of self defense by authors such as Geoff Thompson, Marc MacYoung, and Jim Grover (aka Kelly McCann). I also started purchasing videos by people such as Tony Blauer and Hoch Hockheim.

In 2001 I attended a Practical Edged Weapons seminar and had the opportunity to train with people such as Ernest Emerson and Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny.

In 2004 I became certified as an instructor under the personal supervision of Jim Wagner.

In August I will begin training with professional NHB fighter Chris Brennon.
