We believe in God. God is all-powerful, all-knowing, ageless, and is a God of love and mercy. God created the all of the universe by the strength of His will. People have been made in God’s image, which is why we are all special and important.
Our whole reason for existence (and why God made us) is this: so that we may have a relationship with God and get to know Him better. So, after God created the earth and all the animals of it, He created a man, Adam. He also made a companion for Adam, a woman, Eve. Together they lived in the Garden of Eden. Everything was cool. There was no pain, suffering, sadness, or anything bad.
Unfortunately, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. They were deceived by Satan, who was disguised as a snake. Now, you may ask yourself, why did God allow there to be evil and sin (doing anything that disobeys God) in the world? It was because He didn’t want us to be robots, so to speak. God wanted us to choose to love Him, not to be forced to love Him.
So, Adam and Eve sinned, and this sin nature was introduced into the human race. We are all born with it. We all have sinned at some point in our life. Now, because of this, we were cut off from God, because since God is pure and good, he can’t have the presence of sin with Him in heaven.
Because of this, God implanted the law through Moses. The Israelites (God’s people at the time, although God later showed His love to all) were to obey this law which was based on giving sacrifices to God when they sinned, which would reconcile them with Him.
However, the Israelites did not always follow God. They have a long history of turning away from Him. They would turn away, God would punish them, they would come back to following God for a generation or two, then turn away again. Plus, they weren’t strong enough to maintain the standard set by God through the law. So, God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world.
Jesus was a man, yet He was different from any man there ever was or will be. He was basically God in the flesh. During His life He performed many miracles (like healing the sick and blind), had a complete understanding of God’s Word, the Bible, and was without sin.
The religious officials at the time were not pleased by all this, however. They considered it blasphemy when Jesus said He was the Son of God. Eventually, they had Jesus crucified.
Crucifixion was a form of execution in the Roman times. Two pieces of wood were nailed together to make a cross. You were nailed to this cross through your hands and your feet. Then the cross was raised in the air, and you were left to hang there until you died. It was probably the most painful way to die. Even taking one breath required a huge amount of effort.
And so, Jesus died on the cross. It looked like Satan had triumphed, but that wasn’t the end of the story.
Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead (as He said He would). He conquered death so that we may have life. Christ took on all the sins that had ever been committed and will ever be committed on the cross. He didn’t sin, so He was a perfect sacrifice for our sins. In the Bible it says, “... if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10: 9-10) We just have to give up our lives to Christ and have faith in Him, and we will have eternal salvation in heaven. Jesus is kind of like the bridge that fills the gap between us and God. Because of Him we can live with Him and God forever in heaven.
As believers, the Cord groups try to grow in their relationship with God and in their faith. We do this through many ways, which include studying the Bible, talking to God through prayer, worshipping Him, and trying our best to live our lives as Christ would.
