City As School was
founded in 1972 as the first alternative high
school in NYC Board of
Education. It was designed to serve
students who had begun
high school in traditional schools, but who
were at risk of dropping
out. Insted of the usual 8 classes per day
repeated 5 days a week for
each semester, CAS's innovative design
stressed experiential
learning interships throughout the city combined
with classes and more
individual attention than is possible in large
school. In our 4-cycle per
school year schedule a student's program
might be different every
day of the week, with new choices made
four times a year, and
would provide the student with the chance to
explore interests in the
world of work while earning high school
credit. This design has
reconnected thousand of young people with
secondary education by
helping them to see its relevance to their
present lives and future
goals.
