The gray wolf is the ancient and noble animal representing the nation of Turks stretching from the Northern Pacific Ocean, west through Siberia, to Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. The gray wolf is intertwined in countless stories, legends, and mythologies of the Turks. One mythology relates that in a great battle the Turkish nation was destroyed except for a baby prince, who was left to die in the battlefield. A lone she-wolf named Asena happened upon the babe and took him away to the legendary Ergenekon mountain range in Northern Siberia. Within this mountain, the boy was reared by the wolf to maturity where upon Asena and the prince gave birth to the new Turks...
Why can the Germans & Americans have their eagle, the Russians their bear,
Brits their lion, Koreans the Siberian tiger... Why do we feel the
need to shun our 5,000 year, unique, history and identification with the
wolf?
Due to the association of the gray wolf to a modern, rightist,
political group in Turkiye, the animal has caused many modern Turks to
shy away from the beauty, loyalty, intelligence, and strength that our
ancestors so rightfully choose as our symbol. I feel it's simpleminded
and unfortunate that many have these knee jerk reactions when ever the
topic of Wolves and Turks are spoken of...
