Really neat site that you have here. Looks like you walked around much of the outside of the castle after the tour, and took pictures. I did the same thing. Check out a few of my pics from my May 1998 visit if you wish. They are at a Yahoo Club called "Co ditz Castle Escapes POWs", where I have highlighted several escapes.

Like many others, after the BBC TV series in the 70's and Pat Reid's books I was hooked. Luckily in November 94 I managed to get to Colditz. I arrived by train via Leipzig and to walk through the town much as all the prisoners did, looking up at the dark fortress in the rain made me realise what a grim place it was, and is. It rained all day, but managed to walk freely around the Kommandantur area and even try the door that Pat Reid had so much trouble with in his own escape. At this time I think the Castle was being used as an old people's hospital so there were a few people about, cars parked etc. Not being able to go further I went back into town to the museum. They have many excellent exhibits cruciform lock pickers, cardboard holsters, rope and sacks from the French tunnel and the "Trap" used in the Airey Neave escape. It was at this point I found out that they do guided tours. So an hour or two later found me with the lady from the museum being personally escorted into the inner coutryard. Where there was lots of building work being done, and into the chapel. Then under the chapel where she showed me some stuff they'd recently found whilst re-roofing the old French/British quarters, lots if old tins, a camp bed and blanket and "Arthur" 2 the ex French and British radio set. I then went on a tour on my own down to the park and tiergarten and spent the rest of the day wandering in the drizzle and tryimg to locate various terraces, buttresses, windows etc. On the way out I paused to check the wicket gate that Neave and Lutyens used I think it was still there. It was a very moving day and that night I slept in the shadow of the castle wall in the local Youth Hostel for about £3. Your site brought back many memories of that day and is very well informed. It seems from your photos that it has been tidied up a lot

My grandfather, Jack Best, was in Colditz from 1941-1945. He is an incredible man who has only good memories from his time in Colditz. The Channel 4 series and most notably the reconstruction of the glider has been a fantastic demonstration of the ingin ity of all the prisoners.

Well done, nice to see colour photos of the place I have read so much about since an early age. It is a lesson to us all; stick at it and virtually nothing will prove impossible.

Enjoyed your site. Visited Colditz in 1993 and, having read so many books about it, I felt as though I knew my way around. 'Padre in Colditz' by J. Ellison Platt is a great read but I think it's out of print. Keep up the good work !
