I was liberated from Stalag VIII-A near Colditz Germany 16 April 1945.I never heard of or about the Castle until I found your web site this week. Is there another place named Gorlitz Germany? I was at IV-B near Muhlburg before being sent to VIII-A. Can any one out there put me in order of where Stalag VIII-A was located. Thanks, Another old American Soldier of WW-2 H W McCord email, muttdpup@hiwaay.net

Twenty years ago, I was suspended from high school for calling the principal a "goon." I am reading Reid's books again. This site really gives a sense of space to the descriptions I have read and re-read over the years. Thanks.

This is the best site I have ever stumbled across. Read all the books at school and have most of them now. As a film maker would love to make a video and include less well known stories and inmates. Perhaps find German guards.

I have just arrived back from visitng the castle and this site proved invaluable both before my trip and also afterwards as it has added information to things I may have missed. Anyone who gets a chance to go then go. Although the castle is in bad shape, in a way this adds to the atmosphere. Regards Carl Thomas

My late father-in-law, (Captain) Dr. Morton H. Rose, was battalion surgeon for the U.S. Army's 273rd Infantry, 3rd battalion, which was involved in the liberation of Colditz from the Nazis in April 1945. He helped to save survivors of the Hasag slave-lab r camp in Colditz, and also treated American soldiers wounded during fighting in the area. I'm looking for more information on his heroic service to honor his memory.

I've had an interest in Colditz for many years (since reading Airey Neave's book)and played the board game many times , but never had the chance to visit. Your site gave a tour which I found very informative and stimulating. It is my intention to visit t e town and the castle in the next 2/3 months and would welcome any suggestions on how best to do it.

My dad is one of the few Dutch officers who spent some years at Colditz Castle. He is still alive at 84 and asked me if I could check some websites to see if people are still interested in the Colditz story. In Holland there is not much interest in Coldit ; most Dutch officers at the time agreed to co-operate with the Germans to get out of Colditz. My dad refused and stayed till the end. I am proud he did!

This is a very nice site. The photographs are clear and the interactive map is particularly helpful. I just recommended your site to a friend of mine who is teaching a course about POWs in the Spring Semester. I hope that you will keep adding to this site over time. Best wishes, Joe

Fantastic site!...I recently returned from a trip to Colditz. I have been fascinated with the Castle for years. I have read most of the books available here in Australia and would love to hear from anyone willing to share their stories. I travelled to Col itz by train from Berlin with my girlfriend which was a big mistake- apart from her being bored & not understanding why I dragged her all the way from Australia to see a Castle in the middle of nowhere! not to mention her luggage consisting of a 45Kg suit ase, 1 huge backpack, and countless other bags- we soon learned the German trains unlike Australian trains run on time! We did finally make it and stayed in a Pensione in the town of Colditz....the journey was worth it! thanks

Outstanding site. I've been reading PR Reid's books as early as the 60's, read them over again, and always find something new. This site is as close to being at Colditz as I can get for the time being. Spent six months in Germany but it was a divided c untry then. A trip to Colditz is now possible.

Excellent website. Very informative. You must have taken a great deal of time in organising this. Great interactive links and fascinating escape information. I watched Escape from Colditz last night on VHS video and thought I'd search on the web for a sit . Great detail. I look forward to the detailed escape attempts of Airey Neave and Pat Reid and the daring 60 second attempt. I'll visit again.

I found P R Reid's 'The Colditz Story' at a jumble sale some weeks ago. I've always had a somewhat vague interest in WW2 but this awesome book of courage and determination left me wanting to know much more. Great web site..

Thanks, very interesting, my farther was a POA, I do have some photos of him in the court yard. My mother said he made a succesful escape attempt, but I have never read about it anywhere, although I do have a book called 'Detour' which shows a sketch, so I do know he was there. If anybody knows anythink I would be interested to learn more.
