Tour of Colditz Castle
Page Three
Continuing in an anti-clockwise direction around the courtyard, we next arrive at its eastern face. A door in the centre of this wall led to the cells in which the Prominente (prisoners of political significance, which may have been useful as hostages e.g. Giles Romilly, the nephew of Wiston Churchill) were housed. The barber’s shop and the camp dentist were also situated in this area of the castle. Many of the windows overlooking the courtyard in this face of the castle belonged to the prisoner’s quarters.
The north side of the courtyard, containing some of the French living quarters, sees the greatest amount of sunlight during the day.
It was in one of the attics above these quarters that the famous Colditz glider was secretly built in a sealed-off workshop. Click here for more information.
Also contained in the northern face of the courtyard is the entrance to the chapel.
