Captain Charles A. Atwell

 One of the original members of Battery 'E', became the second commander of the unit.

 Enrolled for duty on September 8, 1861 at the age of twenty-one. Elected first lieutenant at the unit's organization.

 Remained in Pittsburgh to recruit members for the battery from October 1861 through February 1862, by orders of Col. Geary.

 Commanded the unit's left section.

 Returned to recruiting service at home from August through October 1862. Missed the battles of Cedar Mountain and Antietam at this time.

 May 1863, wounded at Chancellorsville with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. Absent on sick leave until June 10, 1863.

 Rejoined the unit as battery commander upon the resignation of Capt. Knap.

 October 29, 1863 at the battle of Wauhatchie, Tennessee, received two wounds, one to the groin, and a fatal wound to the spinal column.

 Died from wounds on November 2, 1863 at Chattanooga, Tenn.
