Lt. Edward R. Geary

Lt. Edward R. Geary

 Born at Salem, Westmoreland County, PA on September 1, 1845.

 Son of General John W. Geary, commander of 2nd Div., Twelfth Corps, later to become Governor of Pennsylvania.

 Mustered into Knap's Independent Battery 'E' on September 8, 1861 as a Second Lieutenant.

 Wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va. on August 9, 1862.

 Promoted to First Lieutenant on July 16, 1863.

 Killed in battle at Wauhatchie, Tennessee on October 29, 1863, at the age of 18. Was to be commissioned to be Captain of Hampton's Battery 'F' on October 20, 1863, however, he was killed before being mustered in. His father (Gen. Geary) had his commission in his pocket on the day he was killed.

 Buried in New Salem (Delmont), Pa.

 Breveted Major and Lt. Colonel on March 13, 1865.
