Captain Joseph M. Knap

 Organizer and first commanding officer of Independent Battery 'E'.

 Born December 30, 1837 at Brownsville, NY.

 Enlisted in army at 24 years of age, enrolled in Co. 'L', 28th PA Vol. Infantry on July 20, 1861.

 August 1861, recruits & organizes the "Fort Pitt Artillery", (later to become Independent Battery 'E').

 Serves with Battery 'E' until May 16, 1863, when he resigns to accept a position at the Fort Pitt Foundry in Pittsburgh, PA.

 September 1, 1864 he married Sophia Hale Day, father of 3 children: Mary Knap (born September 4, 1865), Edgar Day Knap (born May 31, 1870), and Joseph Day Knap (born June 7, 1875).

 Died, June 21, 1920 of chronic heart disease, buried in the village cemetery, Catskill, NY.
