Hot War, Cold War
Cover Notes Since the end of the Second World War, the British Army has been a engaged in a variety of conflicts, ranging from full-scale armored warfare in the Gulf to combating urban terrorism in Northern Ireland. Alongside these many hot wars has been, until the early 1990's, the Cold War between East and West, which has required the Army to prepare for war, possibly including the use of nuclear weapons, on mainland Europe. That war never happened, but for more than 40 years was at the center of Britain's defense planning. Hot War, Cold War is an examination of the way in which the British Army has fought its wars since 1945, and of the Army's place in defense policy. It identifies the distinctive style which has characterized both the Army's approach to war and its role in British defense policy. Despite the wide variety of conflicts in which the Army has been used from the hills of Korea to the desert of Kuwait, and from the jungles of Malaya to the streets of Belfast - it has retained a remarkable consistency of approach. Further despite the changes in Britain's world position since 1945, the place and role of the army in defense policy has remained relatively unchanged. Together these constitute to the British Army's way in Warfare. Reviews
