What a Divison that was.just makes me proud to be a tin can sailor and sail with some great people. Kee up your good work. We of the Ingersoll are having a reuion in Newport R.I. IN October, like you they are fun to attend. If a Gunners Mate NAME OF Pete MESSINA SHOWS up at your next reunion tell him I said, we were in boot camp together. Stay well.

During the time I was on board I served as a gunners mate. While I was on board we were deployed to the far east with COMCRUDESPAC DESDIV 212 in 1962. Out sister ship DD652 the Braine was there as well as two other Fletcher class destroyers DD630 and DD 66 I don't remember their names. We were assigned to accompany USS Hancock CVA 19. It is interesting to find out what has happened to my ship and her sister ship. I found out that the USS Cogswell has been transfered to Turky and her sister was used as target practice and sunk. I wonder what happend to the Hancock? Thanks for being here. Harry P.S. Please excuse any spelling errors.

I spent my 3/c (summer between freshman and sophomore years)midshipman cruise on Cogswell with 5 or 6 other middies from various NROTC programs. There were 4 of us from the Purdue Unit. It was my first real shipboard experience. We were berthed in the ompartment just aft of the mess deck, my rack was next to the door leading to the mess deck. We embarked in June 69, stayed on board until August with a couple of weeks on the RK Turner. Unfortunately, Cogswell did not get underway much during this time but we did go to Seal Beach to load ammo and then to San Miguel island for gunnery exercises. I remember sitting in the mess deck on a duty day watching Neal Armstrong set foot on the moon. I still have a Zippo lighter with the Cogswell engraved on it. The wardroom and crew were good people. I went on to be commissioned, served 3 years on USS Flint (AE-32) and then as a NROTC instructor before leaving the Navy as a LT.

Thanks for the great web site. The most gratifying time aboard was when we came out of a major overhaul prior to 65 Westpac Deployment, and all our equipment worked the way it was supposed to for a change. Up to then, we couldn't even see an incoming bo ie on the Main Battery Radar until 5,000 yds. Afterward we could lock on at 50,000 yds, the way it was supposed to work...a great morale booster. I went through three CO's, and we maintained a great crew throughout. Wouldn't trade those 3 years for anything. Looking forward to more cruise photos and history. My sons have enjoyed getting a sense of Dad's past. Thanks again.

Went aboard directly out of Radar Operators school Treasure Island, Ca. After several weeks of trying to catch up with her, finally went aboard in Subic Bay in the Phillipine Islands. It was the hottest and most humid day I can remember and she was the De troyer of six tied along side of the Tender. We spent that summer on the Formosan Patrol and operations out of Japan. It was a great cruise filled with lots of great memories. Glad to see there is other sharing my interest.

I have greatly enjoyed this site. I've known about this ship with my name on it for years but untill know found very little about it. See also http://www.uss-salem.org/danfs/destroy/dd651txt.htm for more info on the cruises of the 651. When is your Reunion in October 1999? Great pictures. My father will be thrilled. Thank you so much. The Cogswell family landed in America on the Angel Gabriel (formerly Sir Walter Raligh's Flag ship) in 1634, crash landing in Penaquid, Maine. John Cogswell , who is the forfather of almost all the Cogswells in America, settled in Ipswich Mass with a ho se in town and a farm in the country. His great grandson Nathaniel built the first bridge across Great Bay NH.. One heir from Atkinson NH was a Sergeon General in the American Revolution participating in the Battle of Portsmouth, NH where the gun powder or the battle of Bunker Hill was "aquired" from the British. My father Norman H. Cogswell fought in WWII as a decorated B24 Pilot and Ret as a LT. Col. USAF. My brother Alan served as a US Marine in Viet Nam War. I am a retired Chief Operations Specialist, Naval Reservist with 27 years service. I have served on ac ive duty on the Uss Dupont DD941 (69/70), USS New Jersey, BB62 (1984 Lebanon), Desert Storm (1991) Staff - COMUSMCMGRU, and Haiti 1994 as Staff Command Master Chief for the Harbor Defense Command, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It seems the Cogswell family foll ws still in the military, and for me seagoing, heritage of Adm. James Cogswell and Capt. Francis Cogswell. Rick Cogswell

After being on a DLG the Cogswell was a bit of a shock! Made a midshipmen's cruise on her to Hawaii with a bunch of other DDs and a few cruisers. A few years later that formation probably wasn't possible - not with real cans and real cruisers anyway. I wa a radarman. Left the ship for a DLG again, then was back just before mustering out. Messcooking as an RD3, can you believe that! (The rest of the div. was at fire fighting school.) Met my first wife while in the yards at Mare Island - but that's another orror story (her that is).

I think it's cool that your ship has it's own web site I wish the two ships I was on had one, but they don't, but it does bring back memories. I think that one of my freinds that was on the U.S.S Helena was on the the Cogswell after we decommissioned it, ut it's been to long to remember his name. The Mullany has a cool site also. I was pleased to catch your site on the Web. I only had a brief two months on the Cogswell but I remember it quite well, for being nearly 40 years ago. As I recall, we sailed in a group with the carrier Bennington and two other cans, the Ingersoll and ? ( orry, can't remember the name).? collided with the Benny during refueling and took out a bunch of superstructure. We towed her back to port. Anybody out there on the same tour would love to hear from them.

Real neat to see the COGSWELL with a web site. I was temporarily assigned to the COGSWELL out of boot camp awaiting A school. Got to be initiated to mess cooking and remember a 3rd class cook I called "RED" He was quite a guy. COGSWELL had just returned from a WESTPAC. Before I left for A school did get to make a trip to the 1966 Rose Parade aboard her at Portland, Oregon. That was a neat experience. While only aboard for a short time, will always remember her. After A school I was assigned to USS DAVIDSON DE-1045, a new pressure fired ship, so she was a step up living style, but no greater than the COGSWELL. Doubt any shipmates would remember me, but I do remember MM3/c Johnson, and an officer by the name of Sampson, and the MM chief Milne. Best regards.

I 'll be happy to pay for the development and postage. I assume you are aware of the reunion in San Diego in 1999? Very truly yours, James K. Cogswell IV (great grandson of Admiral J.K. Cogswell)
