ROSTER OF THE "GRENADA RIFLES," CO. G, 15TH MISSISSIPPI INFANTRY

This roster of "Grenada Men Who Went to War in 1861" appeared in an article in the 16 July 1936 edition of the Grenada Sentinel, which was a reprint of an article that originally appeared in the Sentinel in May 1861. Courtesy Rev. Paul C. Reese (copy in the Mississippi State Museum files).

The Grenada Rifles, from Grenada (then Yalobusha County), Mississippi, mustered into state service on 19 April 1861. They became Company G of the 15th Mississippi Infantry.

(Ensign was a special rank for color-bearer, dating from the War of 1812. It was revived in 1861 for state service of several Southern states, and was re-instituted in Confederate service in the spring of 1864. In 1861 and early 1862, most Southern companies had their own flags, and many Confederate regiments fought their early battles (such as Mill Springs) under more than one flag.  Click here to read details on the capture of the Grenada Rifles flag at Mill Springs.)
