North Carolina




Harbert A. Cole was a private citizen. He was arrested on his farm in North Carolina by the Federal troops and taken to Camp Chase where he died on May 4, 1864. He was around 61 years of age. There was no cause given for the arrest. Harbert A. Cole is buried in grave # 148. His son, William R. Cole, M.D. was a surgeon during the entire war.

Lewis Perry SILVER was a private in Co. I, 29th North Carolina Infantry. He was born abt 1839. His wife was Nancy WOODY, born 1842 in Yancey, NC, daughter of Edward WOODY and Elizabeth ROBINSON. Lewis P. Silver resided in Mitchell Co where he enlisted in the 29th NC Inf. at age 22 on July 11, 1861. [Note that this is the same unit and date of enlistment as his brother-in-law Wiley Gilbert Woody].
The 29th NC was commanded by Lt. Col. B.S. Proffitt, which was part of Brig. Gen. M.D. Ector's brigade, of Major Gen. Samuel G. French's division, of Polk's (or Stewart's) corps, Army of Mississippi, commanded by Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk.
Lewis was captured in KY Sep/Nov 1862, confined at Chattanooga, TN, and exchanged on 11 Jan 1863. He was again captured near Atlanta, GA, on July 22, 1864. Sent to Nashville, TN. Confined at Louisville, KY, 30 Jul 1864. Transferred to Camp Chase, OH, where he arrived on 2 Aug 1864. Lewis died at Camp Chase November 9, 1864, of typhoid fever. Grave # 440, row 14, no. 11.

Morgan Smith was a private in Co. D, 6th North Carolina Infantry. Born in 1833 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Morgan was a cooper and a farmer before enlisting. He was captured at Winchester, VA on July 20, 1864 and died on January 20, 1865 at Camp Chase of smallpox. He is buried in grave # 831, leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and three sons, John D., Everett, and Pinkney Smith.
