James H. Brown was an original member of
Company I (Toombs Guards), 9th Regiment Georgia Infantry.
He enlisted in Statesboro, Georgia shortly after hostilities began and the unit was sent to Richmond in the Summer of 1861 to become part of Anderson's Brigade, Jones Division, Longstreets Corps. The unit spent most of the war with Longstreet. Longstreet was in winter quarters in east Tennessee in early 1864, and James was on picket duty at a rail junction in Bull's Gap, Tennessee. A skirmish took place with the 3rd Indiana Cavalry. James and a number of others were taken captive and sent first to Nashville, Tennessee, then on finally to Camp Chase, Ohio. He remained there until the war ended. He was
paroled May 15, 1865 and returned home to Bulloch County, GA.
He married and raised a large family, eight children including my

Doctor L.A. Palmer was a member of the 40th Georgia Infantry Regiment (Paulding Washington Guards),
Stovall's Georgia Infantry Brigade. He was captured at Atlanta, GA, on July 22, 1864. Dr. Palmer was transferred from Camp Chase to
City Point, Va. for exchange on March 4, 1865.
