1st Detachment (Abn) Project "Freedom Fighters Forces" Homepage The 1st Detachment was activated at Udornthani (Thailand) on December 1975. The unit was formed with western and asian elements with experience in unconventional operations. Its mission was to advise and assist the Lao resistance groups fighting against the North Vietnamese and the Pathet Lao. Guerrilla and counterguerrilla operations were only a part of the project, the 1st Detachment conducted also a wide variety of medical and non medical civic actions including distribuition of relief supplies to refugees, buildind and repairing schools, marketplaces, pagodas and roads. One of the characteristics of the detachment was its capacity to conduct operations inside territory controlled by enemy forces. Training consisted of repetitive practical exercises in advanced infantry and special warfare tactics. They became a small but important part of the defensive mechanism of Thailand at the time when there were few others to fight in defence of freedom.
