My grandpa, Leonard D Tygart, was a belly gunner on a B-24 with the 777th. His pilot was John Kibler. Plane's name was Pistol Packin' Mama. They flew 23 missions from around April 44 until they were shot down on a raid over Fjestul Austria near Vienna on uly 8 1944. Grandma was pregnant with my dad at that time. Both the pilot (Kibler) and a waist gunner named Arragoni went down with the plane. The others were capured and spent the remainder of the war as P.O.W's. Grandpa's camp, Stalag Luft #4 in Gross T schow, was evacuated on Jan 29, 1945 and the prisoners were forced to march in circles and sleep outdoors and scrounge for food as they tried to stay ahead of the advancing enemy lines. They were liberated in May 1945. Grandpa passed away in 1988 at age 6 from emphysema traced back to his P.O.W experience. There is obviously more to this story but I've already written a book. I am in constant awe of the brave men who climbed aboard these big war planes and faced such terrible odds. We should not forget.

As a writer, I am especially grateful for pages like this fine one about the 464th BG and its squadrons. While writing about the European airwar in my novel, The Triumph and the Glory, I often consulted the various veteran's websites on the internet. Th y provided a wealth of information! I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the preservation of our military heritage by visiting the veteran's websites and so generously offering their thoughts, comments, and words of remembrance.

My father was also in the 777th, 464 Bomb Group. He was a co-pilot of a B-24. His pilot is listed on your dad's crewman name list, Captain Tudor, shot down over Blechammer on August 7th, 1944. My dad was one of the 5 POW's mentioned. My dad is still alive but has First Statges Alzheimers. He still remembers things pretty clear though during his war days. Would love to start a correspondence with you and share information, stories, pictures. His plane was "All Meat and No Potatoes". I have a picture of him and the crew that is pretty cool. My uncle, TSgt. Merland Buttolph, of Bennett, IA, flew with the 55th Bomb Wing, 464th Bomb Group, 777th Squadron, in the B-24 named "Beelzebub". His rating was Flight Engineer/Gunner. "Beelzebub" Plot was Lt. Lester Rapheal with Lt. Kenneth Sears as Co-Pl t. They were based out of Bari, Italy in 1944. Their last mission was on the 27th of May 1944. They received heavy flak damage over their target, Lyons, France. Trying to make it back to the island of Corsica, France, it was necessary to jump, after devel ping two uncontrollable engine fires. Landing in the Po Valley, near Leghorn, Italy, they were captured by Italians and later that day turned over to the Germans. They were taken to the POW Camp, Stalag Luft III. Billeted in the Westcamp, Barracks #166 fo a period of time. Later moved to Stalag 13-D where General George Patton later liberated 88,000 men, on April 29, 1945. Merland would like to know if someone has or knows how to get a copy of the "Morning Reports" for the 27th and 28th May 1944 for his Squadron. He has also located all, but one of the fight crew for the "Beelzebub". Anyone that could help find and or know the where about of one SSgt. Frank "Smokey" Onorato, Ball Turret Gunner, from Newark, NJ, please e-mail me at Tradetowin@AOL.com. I’ll forward ll information to Merland. Merland and his wife Darlene winter in Mesa, AZ and both are very active with "American EX-POW", East Valley Chapter, Mesa, AZ. Enclosed is a scan of a picture of the "Beelzebub" and her crew. My cousin, Lt. Thomas F. Delaney was a co-pilot on a B-24. 15th AF, 304th BombWind, 455th Bombardment Group, 743rd Sq. stationed San Giovani, Italy from July 1944 to past Nov. 1944. They were called the Vulgar Vultures. After 6 years of searching and bei g in contact with hundreds of nice people connected now and in the past with the air force, I managed to get a copy of his first 35 missions. St Louis Personnel Records Center no help due to fire that destroyed most Army WW11 personnel records. I know Tom (who might have been called Frank by his buddies) received the DFC but I can't find out why. I suspect that he was transferred out of the 743rd sometime after Nov. 1944 because the paper trail on him doesn't pick up again until Mar. 1945 at a dental appoi tment in N.J. I suspect that during this missing period he received the DFC. Can anyone tell me how to find out more? I have been told by several military historians that Tom would have gotten one copy of the citation and St. Lousi should have had the ot er. Is this corrrect? It is the only piece of information I am missing after all these years of searching. I had nothing to go on but his photo and birth and death dates on the back. He was transferred to the 553 Ferrying Group, Romulus Field Michigan in ay of 1945 and was killed while night training on a C30 Aug. 4, 1945. I have copies of crash report 9mostly blacked out). Anyone out there who was at Romulus around this time? This site is great and a credit to you. After writting over 40 letters requesting info about my search over the past several years , it's a pleasure to know others will see this note and may be able to help. Please contact me at my e mail address. So e time in the future I hope to put up a site like you did. Maybe someone will recognize Tom's picture and get in touch with me. I never knew him, being born after he died, but he and you father and all the rest were damn brave men and my boys and I thank them.

A very nice site that honors your Dad and shows your love for him. My Dad, Howard Thibault, was a top turret/flight engineer with McGrath's crew on the B-17 "True Love". I have been conducting a search for his crew and any guys that might have served with him. I have found all but four of the crew! Those missin are: Baber, Newton, Pizzitole, and Lewis. They flew with the 388th bomb group 563rd squadron stationed at Knettishall, England (station 136). My goal started out to reunite the crew and it has turned into much more than that. I have met a great bunch f new friends and learned a lot. I am making a scrapbook to give to my Dad. My Dad and his crew had to bail out of their plane on June 20, 1944 after a mid-air collision with another plane believed to be "Heavens Above". Heavens Above got out of control due to prop wash from a group of B-24's that flew over their formation s I understand it. Her ball turret guns were pointing down and sliced thru the True Love. She then spun around and hit their tail. The True Love went into a dive and it was all they could do to right her. She tried to make it back to base, as they got over England's coast, she started to fall apart. The pilot turned old True Love's nose toward the North Sea and ordered the crew to bail. My Dad's chute failed, and he landed on a temperary air strip, breaking his pelvis. But they were safe and ALIVE! Any help or infomation in locating the above missing four will be greatly appreciated.

An impressive page and a great tribute to your father. Mine was a B24 waist gunner. He's still alive and we go to airshows whenever possible. It's up to us to keep the history and the memory of their sacrafice alive for future generations. If you ever get a chance to visit Van Nuys airport, stop by our B25 and say "hi".

Mine was a bombardier on a B24J in China, adn passed away a little more than a year ago and didn't pass on much information to me about his experiences. These types of internet sites are my best o portunities to talk with people, and those who knew people that wrote this great page in history. Keep up the good work.
