The CAP Leader Professional Journal

As many of you may or may not know there is a new CAP professional journal out there since the demise of the CAP Officer Professional Journal several months ago. It is called The CAP Leader and was started by Major Carl W. Jylland-Halverson and Major Michael Ney both of Indiana Wing. Major Jylland-Halverson is the Indiana Wing Public Affairs Officer and Major Ney is the webmaster for the Indiana Wing website. Our very own Captain Reynolds has been added as an additional editor to help with proofing and reviewing the articles. Since we now have an inside man on the CAP Leader we can tell you that a very interesting set of articles on different subject matter will be coming out soon. Articles written by current and past CAP members and members of our Armed Services are currently contributing their talents to the next issue. Want to know what the topics are? Well, you’ll have to read the next issue of the CAP Leader to find that out. You can get to the CAP Leader website via a link on our squadron website Links page or visit them directly at: http://www.inwingcap.org/capleader/index.htm

Read the 184th Report with a Handheld Device

We’ll get into more detail about this later but we wanted all of you to know that we have added a new page where you can go to setup an AvantGo channel for our website. You’ll be able to download and read the 184th Report on your mobile handheld device. Which means anything that supports AvantGo you can use! The new page is located at http://geocities.datacellar.net/cap12184/pda_directions.html We will be adding more areas of our site in the future to take advantage of this technology. Many thanks to Lt. Colonel Ashcraft who did the bulk of getting this setup on our site. Look for an article on our website and our use of this technology in an upcoming issue of the CAP Leader. We will be talking more about this new feature in future issues of the 184th Report. So keep reading and visiting our website for updates!

The Drill Down Competition and Kevlar Award

As you know in November we had a great drill down competition between the cadets. In December due to the holidays we postponed a new drill down till January. But we did introduce our new year long cadet competition called the "Kevlar Award". The competition is based on a point system where cadets earn points for things like promotions, attendance at Encampments and search and rescue activities, recruiting, and the like. In December 2001 the 2 cadets with the most number of points will win the "Kevlar Award". We will be posting our "Kevlar Award" to our files page soon for other units to review. As you may have read on our index page of our website we did not have a drill down in December. We will be kicking one off again in January. Look for details on our index page and in future 184th Reports for play-by-play details of the competitions and the winners.

Our Next Practice SAR….Has been scheduled!

For the past few months if you’ve been reading the 184th Report you’ve heard us talk about budgets being approved and waiting to hear when the next practice SAR would occur. Last month we speculated that it might occur in January. Well, we are happy to report that the next SAR will be on February 17th thru the 18th at Cark County Airport and will be hosted by Falcon Composite Squadron. The SAR will focus on GTM and GTL training with additional areas for mission base staff who would like additional training or wish to begin training in a specialty area. Shelbyville will be participating in this SAR and we plan on attending all day Saturday. For more information about the SAR contact Capt. Williamson at: scout126@juno.com

Cadets’ complete achievements

Several of you have completed your achievements and are working on your next achievement. Some of you have only a few things left to do in order to meet your next promotion. We would like to see all cadets to their best to test this month and finish up any requirements that you need to make your next promotion. Special Activities application process (Review Boards are on January 27th at Grissom!!!) is just around the corner and any extra stripes you can earn between now and then will only help your chances of being selected. Also keep in mind that if you have participated in an encampment before you are eligible to apply for staff at the next encampment activity. Word is that there will be a Spring Type B encampment and the Type A at Camp Atterbury this summer is July 14th-21st. Some of the cadet airman should consider applying for Flight Sergeant at the encampment. If you have questions or need assistance talk with your Cadet Commander, C/1st Lt. Waggoner and the Deputy Commander for Cadets, Capt. Reynolds.
