The 184th Report

Shelbyville Composite Squadron

GLR-IN-184th

January 2002

Welcome Back!

As you've probably noticed we've not published an issue of The 184th Report since July of last year. We've had several reasons for this. Lack of events at the end of the fiscal year, schedules and commitments from our staff, and the events of September 11th. The events of September 11th have put us in a bit of a holding pattern of waiting to see what kind of tasking we will be given to combat terrorism in the new defense and security of homelands (DASH) initiative. What we will attempt to do here is to continue to bring you news and information about the 184th but to also fill you in on events and things of interest outside of our unit. If you have any suggestions or wish to contribute to the 184th Report send us an email at: cap12184@yahoo.com. As always if you have a squadron event or activity you want to let others know about we'll be happy to list them in our "Other Events" section – just send the details to the address listed above.

Homeland Defense

Yes, we've also heard the rumors and buzz surrounding the Auxiliary's role in homeland defense. As of the writing of this edition of The 184th Report we don't have any official notice from National Headquarters on anything to do with homeland defense. So, since we have nothing official to report we'd just like to say that here at the 184th we're just as anxious as you to get in on the fight against terrorism!

The Journal of Leadership Development for the Professional Volunteers of the Civil Air Patrol

The CAP Leader Journal recently went through a hard drive crash. Because of this crash the journal has had to spend a vast amount of time creating a new site for the journal and restore or re-request the articles that it had published. Major Carl Jylland-Halverson, head editor for the journal, decided that it was also time to change the name to the journal. As of the writing of The 184th Report the journal is still undergoing reconstruction but it can be found at: www.inwg.cap.gov/capldr.htm. Also of interest is the fact that Indiana Wing has added a wing staff position for the editor of the journal, of which Major Jylland-Halverson has taken on. Congrats Major!

Former Cadet Robert Comer's Navy Career

An update we've not been able to give with the absence of The 184th Report for the past several months is an update on former cadet Robert Comer. Comer left our unit to enlist in the Navy back in 2000. Comer stopped in several months ago to give us an update on his progress as he goes thru the Naval Nuclear Power Training program. Currently, Comer has completed Nuclear Field "A" School at the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, South Carolina. Comer also as of April 2001 was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. Keep up the good work Comer!

First Annual Kevlar Award

The cadet competition for the mysterious Kevlar Award ran from 1 January 2001 to December 31 2001. As of 1 January 2002 we are starting our second Kevlar Award competition based on points the cadets earn for different activities and accomplishments they perform. The cadets found out that the Kevlar Award is none other than a Kevlar helmet. Several of them got to try it on a few months ago and are eagerly awaiting the announcement of who won this helmet. The winner will be announced at the last squadron meeting of January and in the February edition of The 184th Report. For details on the Kevlar Award visit our files page to download the material.

Just a reminder we have our own domain now at www.184th.com. You can use this address or www.geocities.com/cap12184 to get to our website. As mentioned in previous editions of The 184th Report we plan to eventual leave the Geocities community and move to a new server utilizing the 184th.com domain. We'll let you know when that happens.
