First Annual Kevlar Award Goes to......

The cadet competition for the mysterious Kevlar Award ran from 1 January 2001 to December 31 2001. The winning cadet was presented with the kevlar helmet on 31 January 2002. The winning cadet was C/TSgt Phillip Northam! Congrats go to Cadet Northam and all the cadets who participated this past year. The new Kevlar Award contest started 1 January 2002 and will end on 31 December 2002. That award will be presented in January of 2003 to the winning cadet. For details on the Kevlar Award visit our files page to download the material.

Clark County SAR

Operation Iceberg involved separate Air and Ground Operations on 8-10 February. The Shelbyville Ground Team participated in navigation, and DF training at the Boy Scouts Camp in Charlestown, Indiana. Cadets Northam, Keigley, Burke, Prosser, Denton, Lachance, and Rogers represented the Shelbyville Ground Team. The Ground Team was lead by 1Lt. Matt Skeens. Shelbyville was represented on the Air Ops side of the mission by Captain Jeremy Reynolds. The next SAR is scheduled for 10-12 May in Mt. Comfort, Indiana and is going by the name "Operation Grand Slam". Hopefully this name has something to do with Denny's Grand Slam breakfast.

Squadron Staff Meeting

A squadron staff meeting for the officers of the 184th is scheduled for March 28th. The agenda will include a run down of the current staff assignments, objectives of the year, and upcoming tasks to be addressed. The meeting will follow the 184th change of command that will take place at the Wing Luncheon on 23 March at the Ramada Inn on Thompson Road. Lt. Colonel Ashcraft will be turning over command of the squadron to Captain Reynolds.

Cadet Uniform Inspection

A cadet uniform inspection will occur on 21 March. The inspection is of notice because the three best cadets will each be awarded 3 points towards the Kevlar Award. The points will go to those cadets who's uniforms are the best in appearance and technical correctness. The three points could spell the difference at the end of the year of winning the Kevlar Award or not winning the Kevlar Award.

The Journal of Leadership Development and Auxiliarypower.org

As you may or may not know the CAP Leader went down from a problem with a server. The relaunch of the journal will take place under a new name, The Journal of Leadership Development: a Journal for the Professional Volunteer of the Civil Air Patrol. Currently a new site is underdevelopment that will feature the Journal, the Journal archives, and a new feature - an online discussion forum to discuss professional development, the articles that appear in the Journal, and to generally advance the ideas of Auxiliary Power. The new site will be located at: http://www.auxiliarypower.org once it is complete. Look for updates here in this newsletter.

Seven Propositions Regarding Auxiliary Power

Captain Jeremy Reynolds has been working on a paper prior to and after September 11th that is based on the concept of, "Ten Propositions Regarding Airpower", except it is geared towards the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary. The paper's purpose is to illustrate that the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol, is the fourth pillar of the Air Force and an integral part of the Air Force Total Force concept. The paper is available in our Professional Development section as an Adobe Acrobat file. A chart listing the Seven Propositions is also available on the same page in the same format.
