The 184th Report

Shelbyville Composite Squadron

GLR-IN-184th

March 2002

30 Years Ago This Month....

It was April of 1972 when charter number 12184 was issued to a group of twenty-one charter members of the Shelbyville Composite Squadron on West Washington Street in downtown Shelbyville, Indiana; however, it was March 1972 when the first squadron meetings for the Shelbyville Composite Squadron occurred on the 3rd floor of the Shelbyville City Hall building. The charter was presented to the squadron's first commander, Steve Soller as the rest of the charter members looked on one fine April day. One of those charter members present at that event is our outgoing squadron commander, Lt. Colonel Mark Ashcraft who joined the squadron in 1972 as a cadet. Deidhinn A Cion!

Squadron Patch

We've finalized and received wing approval to adopt our squadron patch. Many of you have seen the patch design at a squadron meeting. If you haven't seen it please ask. We will be ordering patches for our uniforms soon. The estimated cost will be $2 per patch. Further, we will be uploading images of the patch on the squadron files page for you to download and use in any correspondence or for your screen background.

February issue of the 184th Report

We did not send out the February issue on our email list last month. We were updating our mailing list; however, the February issue can be found in the 184th Report page on the squadron website.

Squadron Staff Meeting

A squadron staff meeting for the officers of the 184th is scheduled for March 28th. The agenda will include a run down of the current staff assignments, objectives of the year, and upcoming tasks to be addressed. The meeting will follow the 184th change of command that will take place at the Wing Luncheon on 23 March at the Ramada Inn on Thompson Road. Lt. Colonel Ashcraft will be turning over command of the squadron to Captain Reynolds.

Cadet Uniform Inspection

A cadet uniform inspection will occur on 21 March. The inspection is of notice because the two best cadets will each be awarded 3 points towards the Kevlar Award. The points will go to those cadets who's uniforms are the best in appearance and technical correctness. The three points could spell the difference at the end of the year of winning the Kevlar Award or not winning the Kevlar Award.

Cadet Quiz Bowl

On 30 May, the last meeting in the month of May we will hold a cadet quiz bowl. What's that? Think the "Brain Game" or "Jeopardy" and you'll get the idea. The quiz bowl will test your knowledge of the leadership text, aerospace text, squadron knowledge, Auxiliary knowledge, and perhaps a few surprises. Specific details will follow at the squadron meetings. For now review your materials for the achievements you've done, have worked on, and will be working on. Prizes will be awarded and points toward the Kevlar Award will be given out as well.

Air Force Museum Squadron Trip

The squadron is planning a trip to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Our tentative date is currently April 27th. We will be touring the museum's indoor and outdoor displays. We also plan to make a run to clothing sales for any needed uniform supplies. The trip is open to all family, friends and other squadrons that would like to attend with us on our visit to the museum. Please, check your calendar and get back with your Cadet Commander or the Squadron Commander on whether the 27th will work. If this date will not work for the majority of the squadron we will probably look at a September visit.

The First Annual Squadron Dining Out

One of the goals outlined for the squadron this year is to hold a Dining Out. The Dining Out is a military banquet that has been a military tradition for as long as anyone can remember. The uniform for the event will be mess dress for men (if you don't have it then dress blue's); an evening dress for women; semi-formal for cadets; and business attire for all others. The Dining Out will feature some squadron awards, gags, a speaker, and the grog bowl. Our tentative date is Saturday, October 5th. We will make further announcements here and at the squadron meeting.

The Journal of Leadership Development and Auxiliarypower.org

As you may or may not know the CAP Leader went down from a problem with a server. The relaunch of the journal will take place under a new name, The Journal of Leadership Development: a Journal for the Professional Volunteer of the Civil Air Patrol. Currently a new site is underdevelopment that will feature the Journal, the Journal archives, and a new feature - an online discussion forum to discuss professional development, the articles that appear in the Journal, and to generally advance the ideas of Auxiliary Power. The new site will be located at: http://www.auxiliarypower.org once it is complete. Look for updates here in this newsletter.

Seven Propositions Regarding Auxiliary Power

Captain Jeremy Reynolds has been working on a paper prior to and after September 11th that is based on the concept of, "Ten Propositions Regarding Airpower", except it is geared towards the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary. The paper's purpose is to illustrate that the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol, is the fourth pillar of the Air Force and an integral part of the Air Force Total Force concept. The paper is available in our Professional Development section as an Adobe Acrobat file. A chart listing the Seven Propositions is also available on the same page in the same format.
