The 184th Report

Shelbyville Composite Squadron

May 2001

Grassroots Communications Topic

Last month we talked about the AAFES website. This month we first wanted to further clarify our aim for this section. Primarily, we would like to showcase ideas that made your PA, Recruiting, ES or AE event/activity a success. Second, we would like to be able to get the word out about your upcoming activity or raise an issue. When we say, “raise an issue” we don’t mean gossip, or complain (I’d like to thank Col. Rick Bowling for suggesting this point). To help further describe the “raise an issue” this month we talk about “Getting People: Fielding a Ground Team or Aircrew” and our idea for a possible solution. We hope it is helpful to your unit and if it works – let us know and spread the word.

Shelbyville Ground Team Actual Mission Log

Shelbyville’s ground team was called out on two actual missions. Both missions were lead by Capt. Reynolds and assisted by CAPFLIGHT 1254 (Greenwood) and both missions turned out to be a non-distress. The first mission was on Friday, April 20th and led us to the Mt. Summit area. The ground team consisted of Capt. Reynolds, C/1Lt. Waggoner, C/SSgt. Northam and C/SrA Northam. The signal was intermittent and we were recalled after the signal had been lost after several passes by SARSAT. The second mission was on Tuesday, April 24th and led us to Muncie’s Delaware County Airport. The ground team consisted of Capt. Reynolds and Capt. Chance. The signal was traced to a Cessna Skymaster sitting in one of the maintenance hangars. As the saying goes “missions always come in three’s” so we are waiting by the phone for that third one.

Shelbyville GTL’s Assisting Greenwood

Would like all Ground Team Leaders at Shelbyville to know that we are looking at possibly visiting Greenwood Senior Squadron on one of their Saturday meetings to assist in training their interested members for the Ground Team Member qualification. Capt. Reynolds is the point of contact on this possibility.

O-Flights Date Needed

All Shelbyville cadets: we need to select a Saturday for O-Flights in May or possibly look at flying before a meeting (5pm) one Thursday evening in May. Please communicate to your cadet staff and Capt. Reynolds a workable date so that we can schedule this activity.

1st Lt. Copes’ First Aid Training Was a Success

Shelbyville Composite Squadron hosted a First Aid/CPR Training day on April 14th at the Shelbyville National Guard Armory. Army and CAP members participated in the activity. The event was put together and ran by 1st Lt. Kris Copes. Capt. Mark Webb and Lt. Col. Ashcraft assisted him. Thanks to all who participated in the event.

Lt. Col. Ashcraft Receives the A. Scott Crossfield Award

We’d like to make special mention about Lt. Col. Ashcraft receiving the Crossfield Award (as Capt. Reynolds forgot to mention it in the April issue). The Crossfield Award is given for those that have attained the master rating in the Aerospace Education specialty track (#215). Congratulations!

Capt. Reynolds Public Affairs Seminar at National Boards

Captain Reynolds will be giving a public affairs seminar at the National Boards on Saturday, August 18th. The seminar has been approved and will be one of the sessions for people interested in the Public Affairs Directorate. The seminar is tentatively titled “Squadron Websites as a Vehicle for Internal and External Public Affairs”. To keep track of this seminar and the National Boards in general visit: http://www.capnhq.gov/conference/pages/nb/nationalboard.html

E-Indiana Outlook

Be sure to read the new Indiana Wing newsletter available on the web at: http://www.inwg.cap.gov/Eoutlook/index.html The E-Indiana Outlook is put together by Major Carl Jylland-Halverson, Indiana Wing Public Affairs Officer. Look for the new issue in the coming weeks.

Volunteer for the National Boards in Cincinnati, Ohio August 16-18 2001

We wanted to let everyone know that a “Summary of Wing/Region Support” document should be circulating with different support areas to volunteer for the National Boards. Areas include transportation, airport duties, communications, and public affairs. Our wing coordinator is Captain Karen Weinkle. If you have questions or would like more information you can contact her at: weinkle@venus.net

Article about our website in the CAP Leader

Captain Reynolds has written an article about the Shelbyville Composite Squadron website that has been added to the newest issue of the CAP Leader. The article talks mostly about the 184th Report and how it is available over various mediums including a handheld device. The article can be read directly by following this link: http://www.inwg.cap.gov/capleader/SQWEB.htm. Other articles are available on the CAP Leader website along with a synopsis of topics to expect this year. If you have an idea for an article then you can find information about submitting your article here: http://www.inwg.cap.gov/capleader/pr06.htm
You can get to the CAP Leader website via a link on our squadron website Links page or visit them directly at: http://www.inwingcap.org/capleader/index.htm

Read the 184th Report with a Handheld Device

In January we mentioned that you could read the 184th Report with any handheld device that supported AvantGo. We have updated our site with a new Mobile Edition page. This page will serve as the introduction to anything relating to mobile content available on our website. For instructions on how to add the 184th Report to AvantGo visit our instructions page: http://geocities.datacellar.net/cap12184/pda_directions.html

*Getting People: Fielding a Ground Team or Aircrew*

On finding people to fielding a ground team (or aircrew but in our case it’s a ground team), it’s not always easy. Work schedules, people being out of town, inactive, in the hospital, or just unable to contact for some reason or another can create a problem if your limited on the number of people you have on your alert roster. You need 2 people to constitute a team. Usually finding just 2 people is rather easy. You could find yourself running a mission at 4 am with 2 people and on the other end find yourself at 2pm with 7 people. The possibility for finding yourself short of the 2-person minimum is rare (at least in our case). This possibility of finding yourself short of people recently came up for Capt. Reynolds on a mission and made him think of a possible solution.

Now this solution is not necessarily new nor is it revolutionary. In the off chance that we find ourselves short on available people we figured it would be a good idea to make our alert roster as big as possible to build in a safety barrier to this possibility. One way is obvious – train more people. This should always be done but it can take some time to put together. The other way (the Capt. Reynolds semi-new idea) is to add qualified people from a nearby unit to your alert roster. After all if the squadron vehicles is really a wing resource, available not just to your squadron – why not the personnel. As an example, the closest unit to Shelbyville is Greenwood (an aircrew centered unit). Greenwood has some newly qualified and trainee personnel for ground team; however, being an aircrew-oriented unit they don’t have a “ground team” or properly equipped vehicle. Shelbyville (a ground team centered unit) has a “ground team” and properly equipped vehicle. Shelbyville can add Greenwood personnel to our ground team alert roster. Thereby, giving us a larger base from which to draw from (and better ensure our numbers) and allows Greenwood an outlet (that they don’t readily have) to participate in missions (and training). This could be done in the opposite direction. Greenwood could add some qualified members from our unit to their aircrew alert roster, as Greenwood has an airplane and an aircrew to man it. Greenwood would then have the benefit of added security in finding people for a mission and Shelbyville has an outlet for member interested in aircrew (Air Ops). This idea is something that is helpful to our units (builds cohesion/teamwork between us). We hope by mentioning it here that it might be helpful to you and your unit. Until next month…
