Shelbyville Composite Squadron

June 2001

Grassroots Communications Topic

Something that will be addressed in the future issue of the E-Indiana Outlook and you will probably here from different echelons is the need for member recognition. Read more about it below. Speaking of communication, we are asking for all of those out there who read this newsletter or visit our website if they would take a moment and drop us a quick note to: cap12184@yahoo.com and let us know what they think of our newsletter and the site. We’d like to know how we’ve been doing so far. Also if you aren’t currently on our mailing list (you’ll get this newsletter automatically each month) drop us a note at the address above and tell us who you are and the email address you would like The 184th Report sent to.

SAR EVAL at Bloomington

The annual Air Force evaluated SAR is coming up very soon on June 8th and 9th in Bloomington. Friday night is for section heads and Saturday will be the day of the actual EVAL. Shelbyville is planning on attending Saturday and being on site at 8:30am. We will be meeting at the squadron van on Mechanic St. check at the Thursday June 7th meeting for exact meeting time and any last minute updates on the EVAL times.

Summer Encampment Next Month!

A reminder that the initial deadline for GLR Southern Encampment or Cadet Leadership School is due 15 June 01.  The encampment and CLS is being held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana from 15-21 July 01.  The cost for either for cadets is $100. There are still some cadet staff positions open due to withdrawals of personnel due to special activities or summer employment.  E-mail pathfinder@tcon.net with any interest. We still have openings for senior members to help support the encampment also.  The cost for senior members is $10. More information may be obtained at:

Major McClure’s Air Traffic Control Class

On May 24th 2001, Major Mike McClure our Air Force RAP officer came in and did the most amazing air traffic control class we have ever seen! Major McClure mapped out the Metro airport runway complete with taxiways, markings and everything right down to the hold short lines. All participants were given a tail number and instructions for their flight plan. Each participant started out in the hanger and proceeded to talk to air traffic control by holding up the corresponding frequency on a piece of paper. Each participant went through the process of talking to Ground and Tower as they taxied and took off from the runway. From there each participant had an assigned flight plan they flew before returning to the airport. It was a busy airport at times and a great learning experience for all. We will be posting photo’s from this class on our website main page in the near future.

New Look and Navigation to Squadron Website

If you’ve received The 184th Report via email you’ll want to drop by the Shelbyville Composite Squadron website to see the new look and feel we’ve just added. You’ll find a new title graphic with integrated site navigation – making it easier to find your way around our ever expanding website. Additional design changes will be seen in the summer months to other areas of our site. Keep checking here and on the website for future updates!

James G. Roche Sworn in as Secretary Of The Air Force

Dr. James G. Roche was sworn in as the 20th Secretary of the Air Force on June 1, 2001, during a ceremony at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. David O. Cooke, director of administration and management for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, administered the oath of office.  Secretary Roche was nominated by President George W. Bush to be secretary of the Air Force on May 7, 2001, and confirmed by the Senate on May 24, 2001. Secretary Roche is responsible for the functioning and efficiency of the Air Force, the formulation of the service's policies and programs, and the timely implementation of decisions and instructions of the president and the secretary of defense. Roche, a retired Navy captain and recipient of the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for the Navy's most improved combat unit in the Pacific in 1974, said he looks "forward to piloting the journey ahead for the Air Force.  My vision is an aerospace future just as remarkable as its admired past. My pledge is that I will serve the way Air Force men and women do every day throughout the world - with integrity, selflessness, and in earnest pursuit of excellence."

*Member Recognition *

As mentioned in a memo from the Indiana Wing Public Affairs Office and the Recruiting and Retention Office member recognition is a vital part of member retention and morale. The ideas presented in the memo were the needs to be an increased emphasize placed on the giving of awards, commendations, and recognition to members of Indiana Wing that perform worthy acts outside of the Annual Awards Banquet. The recognition of members throughout the year concurring with the time of their actions will give proper payment to an all-volunteer force. In addition, the Public Affairs office is recommending that the wing commander encourage and promote member recognition with all subordinate echelons; that wing staff promote the need for member recognition to squadrons and that wing staff put in recommendations for awards; that squadron commanders submit recommendations (CAP Form 120) and recognize members of their unit for a job well done; and lastly that all parties strive to submit properly formatted and well-written recommendations to increase the possibility of them being approved. Together we can help improve wing morale and member retention by giving our hard working volunteers recognition for their acts of service to this wing. Recognize a member today!
