The 184th Report
November saw the end
to our first Drill Down competition. As you'll recall the first drill down
winner was C/Airman Philip Northam. Our second drill down was won by C/A1C
Russ Northam. For our third and final drill down it was tied 1 to 1 between
both Northams'. Some brotherly tension was in the air but which Northam would prevail
and win the competition? Or would another cadet, who had been practicing their
drill movements outside the meeting, come into the scene with better drill
proficiency to take the 3rd drill down and sending the competition into
overtime? On our November 2nd meeting our 3rd drill down ended with only one
cadet left and that cadet was...C/A1C Russ Northam! Northam won the
drill competition by taking 2 out of 3 victories. The prize was a soda pop of
choice from the Armory Coke machine. For those of you who are interested, Cadet
Northam selected a Mountain Dew beverage. In December we will be kicking off yet
another drill down competition. Will Cadet Russ Northam be a repeat winner?
Will Cadet Philip Northam seek to dismount his brother as the reigning
champion? Will we see a new cadet win? Will the competition go into overtime?
To find out - catch the January issue of the 184th Report for the
results!
For the aerospace
class on November 16th Major Seymour showed the cadets how to make
an Alka-Seltzer rocket. The rocket was fashioned from paper. The cadets decided
how many fins to tape on and whether to use a traditional cone or go with a
different topper. Once the rockets were completed they were tested in the Drill
Floor. Several rockets did very well. Cadet Brosier had one of the highest-flying
rockets of the evening. Lt. Col. Ashcraft probably had the record for the
rocket that took the longest to ignite. Other cadets tried some different
design ideas. Cadet Keigley made a rocket that was twice the length of the
recommended size of the rocket. Cadet Philip Northam went with a blunt top to
his rocket instead of cone shape. I think everyone gained a better
understanding of rocketry and will look forward to doing this again.
There has been no official word yet on any upcoming practice search and rescue events. However, if this coming year is scheduled similar to last year than we might see a practice mission in January that could be a “Cool School”. Then we may see another practice mission for the month of March. But for now this is merely speculation. When we know you’ll know.
Cadets’
complete achievements
Several of you have completed your achievements and are working on your next achievement. Some of you have only a few things left to do in order to meet your next promotion. We would like to see all cadets to their best to test this month and finish up any requirements that you need to make your next promotion. Special Activities application process is just around the corner and any extra stripes you can earn between now and then will only help your chances of being selected. Also keep in mind that if you have participated in an encampment before you are eligible to apply for staff at the next encampment activity. Word is that there will be a Spring Type B encampment and the Type A at Camp Atterbury this summer is July 14th-21st. Some of the cadet airman should consider applying for Flight Sergeant at the encampment. If you have questions or need assistance talk with your Cadet Commander, C/1st Lt. Waggoner and the Deputy Commander for Cadets, Capt. Reynolds.
