CADET PROGRAMS

Thunderbolt Squadron is a Cadet Squadron.

As a Cadet Squadron, Thunderbolt provides programs designed to develop a cadet's interests in Aerospace, Leadership and Moral Character. Cadets learn basic radio communications, first aid, CPR, ground team skills, leadership skills, and military customs and courtesies. Being the Official Auxillary to the United States Air Force, there is a lot of interest in flying. The Aerospace Education Program covers flight from balloons to rockets. Principles of flight, history of flight as well as careers in aviation are all explored. Cadets can go on orientation flights and flights aboard military aircraft. Time is allotted at the flight simulator at Westover Air Force Base for cadets to try and fly a C-135. Cadets can also train to be mission observers aboard CAP Corporate Aircraft. Cadets who are at least 16 and have earned the rank of flight officer are eligible to apply for Flight Encampment where they can solo and earn their solo license under the direction of a Certified Flight Instructor.

When qualified, a cadet can participate in actual SAR (Search and Rescue) missions and EVALS (evaluations). All cadets go on Bivouacs (Camping, military style), where ground team and survival skills are learned and practiced. Thunderbolt goes on field trips to interesting and sometimes challanging sites. Building teamwork is a key to success. The cadets run the program themselves (with supervision). The cadet program follows the Air Force chain of command structure. Cadets earn ranks as they progress through the program. They must pass both aerospace and leadership tests, physical fitness tests and formal review boards to earn their rank. Cadets teach classes and run the flight to develop their skills. Drill is an important part of military life. The cadets drill regularly to learn both basic and advanced drill team manuevers. Moral leadershiip is another important component of the cadet program. Values such as honor, duty and public service are what CAP stands for. CAP has an active community role. It has counter drug operations for Senior Members and drug resistance education for cadets.
Because it's many missions requires many skills, there is something for everyone. Flying is fun, but optional. If you like plane's, but are the type that get's airsick, don't worry. Many cadets choose not to fly, it's not a requirement. If your interest's are radio communications, model rockety, ground team, first aid drill or computers and adminstration there's a place for you at THUNDERBOLT!
